The BGN News Archive

January 29, 2024

The BGN is in this big Phaidon Art Book!!!!

Boom Boom BandWillie Alexander's big birthday bash at The Cut in Gloucester got a lot of attention in the local press. One question we got on a Facebook post was, “Are the first two Boom Boom Band albums on MCA available in digital?”

We never thought about that! The albums were never released on CD. Streaming platforms like Spotify, Bandcamp and Apple music do not have the albums.

But...someone posted the albums on You Tube. The first album and Meanwhile…Back in the States

That’s all there is at the moment. We got Live at the Rat because someone made it their business to get it on CD. Mach Bell informs us that MCA is now part of Universal Music. It’s up to them to do something or license the material for someone else to do something.

BGn Mag If you remember, back in November, the BGN was included in the Brooklyn Museum s how Copy Machines Manifestos. Miss Lyn went to the opening and ran into Marc Thor and Nola Rezzo there! We have a write up page with lots of photos! Copy Machines Manifestos is now an accompanying catalog to the show. This is a invaluable resource for anyone into the whole fanzine thing. It's huge, almost 500 pages, with loads of zine covers and interiors, along with tons of other images, and there's Boston Fanzine section! You can purchase the catalog here.

DogmaticsThe Dogmatics are showing the rest of Boston’s rock bands how to make the most of an opportunity. They were smart enough and knew the people to help them make their The Dogmatics: A Dogumentary. That was just the beginning. The way that they've made themselves available to the film festivals was another level. They've made the film/concert two-fer their thing. They had a film/concert at the Rockland High School and now they will have another at the Regent Theatre on Friday, March 15 at 8pm.

Since the Dogumentary has been showing in Film Festivals it’s not been available for streaming on any platforms. At the moment these film/concerts are the thing to go to.

Joey Ramone Book There’s in fighting in the Ramones camp about an upcoming biopic on Joey Ramone.

The arguing is between Linda Ramone, wife of Johnny Ramone and Mickey Leigh, brother of Joey Ramone. The movie (from Netflix) is to be based on Mickey’s book I Slept With Joey Ramone. Linda Ramone wants a voice in what the movie may portray. Nothing was easy between the Ramones if you read the books on the group and now it looks like that contentious relationship will continue even though all the principals are deceased.

Another eyebrow raiser – Joey Ramone will be portrayed by Pete Davidson!! The money makers saw the success of Bohemian Rhapsody that made Queen more successful than ever and want a repeat.

There are more details in the Billboard story

VIDEOS......

The Alkaline Trio had the music spot of Jimmy Kimmel this last Tuesday 1/23. They played “Bad Time” from the album that came out Friday 1/26 Blood, Hair and Eyeballs.

Check out that drummer, Atom Willard! He’s playing relatively simple but with power.

Alkaline Trio songs always seem to have another layer to them. In this case the lyrics “I really wanna talk to you” sounds like a frustrated lover, but there’s something else going on. The narrator is not to be trusted. He’s paranoiac and currently on ‘shrooms’.

You can check you the lyric video to the song on the right to get the complete lyrics. This is a group worth getting into. We saw them at the Brighton Music Hall in May 2015

Here’s “Meet Me” another song from the album on YouTube

There’s good info on the background of the album on the Rock Sound website

Devo

The new documentary about Devo, titled simply Devo played at the Sundance Film Festival. It got a bad review on the Yahoo entrainment page and a good review in Variety

The earlier documentary from 2012 is called Are We Not Men (see above). Just that trailer hit a lot of interesting points. The fact that Devo began from the members being at Kent State when the shooting happened in 1970 is so very revealing.

Vanyaland had an interview with Juliana Hatfield. The major subject was her new album of ELO covers. This follows her cover albums of Olivia Newton John and The Police. She discusses her approaches to the music and reflects on how she heard ELO during her life.

We liked her comments on the Boston scene. She says she never felt any caustic competition in fact the groups were, “focused on their music, working on the music, and it wasn’t about trying to become famous. It’s like you’re just trying to do something with a lot of integrity. That’s the vibe I get. There’s this feeling of almost studiousness and integrity, but also no one takes itself too seriously. No one really ever wanting to step on anyone to get up higher.” That was nice to read.

We like Juliana’s work ethic. She’s always pushing forward, being creative and being regular with album releases.

Brett Milano has an article on Hatfield in the Boston Herald if you can get by the paywall

We think of J Mascis of Dinosaur Junior in the same way as Juliana Hatfield – he has a great work ethic. He’s pumped our 20 albums so far. His songs are still as sharp as ever.

This comes to mind because of the article in The Guardian that looks at Mascis on the verge of his next album What Do We Do Now. They find him hard to talk to and that lethargic tone in his singing voice mirrors his conversational style.

At 58, he shows no intention of slowing down or changing what he does. They quote him saying, “I still get a kick out of making a racket. I mean, I don’t have many other interests.”

Above are two videos of songs from What Do We Do Now that show the acoustic backing that has a burst of guitar distortion in the middle that characterize the album.

Butthole Surfers

Matador is re-releasing the Butthole Surfers’ albums. The initial release will be the first two albums Rembrandt Pussyhorse and PCPPEP. The rest of the albums will follow.

The video above is the song “Butthole Surfers” from the album Psychic... Powerless... Another Man's Sac. It has lots of photos of them on stage. They were wild. We saw them at Great Woods at a Lollapalooza show where they punctuated their set by shooting a shotgun repeatedly.

There is also a Butthole Surfers movie in the planning. More about the reissues on Punktuation You can stream some of the reissues now

Dickie Barrett

Dickie Barrett was on Drew Stone’s New York Hardcore Chronicles for a solid two hour interview. Dickie was on the Boston Hardcore scene from the very beginning, as was Drew. Drew had all the photos showing Dickie at Gallery East shows.

He tells one story, where at a Clash show, him, Drew and Springa climbed on the roof of the Orpheum broke through a skylight and got backstage.

Dickie knew everyone and has loads of stories that go from those early days to the beginning of The Bosstones and then their successful career. Barrett is very forthcoming. He discusses the Bosstones’ breakup and how his anti-vax stance precipitated the end of the group.

He also talks about his new band Defiant.

RADIO......

Joanie Lindstrom did her Channel remembrance show last Thursday 1/25. She had a lot of personal stories involving the bands or the nights. One of the things that struck us was how the music world has changed. Many of the bands Joanie played don't exist anymore. Joanie mentioned that those shows cost five dollars to get in.

To hear the show go to the WMBR archive page and hit the Late Risers Show for Thursday 1/25.

Ron’s Monday Late Riser Club show had a few songs we took a closer look at:

The hardcore group Accidente from Spain did a cover of The Cure’s “Boys Don’t Cry.” They don’t rush the song or flatten out the melody or riffs. They are all there but a little faster and harder. The cut is from an album titled HCXHC – VIII (Hardcore Hits Cancer) which is part of a series where all the money goes to poor cancer patients.

Ron played “The Drain” from the Australian band Split System's upcoming album Vol.2. We're going to spotlight another song that is pre-released called “Alone Again”. The song captures the feeling of someone who is losing their lover and is panicking. These garage punks are very good and the album will be worth seeking out!

Sixties fans will want to check out The Fadeaways doing a cover of the Balloon Farm’s “A Question of Temperature.” The Fadeaways are from Japan. We saw them at O’Brien’s in 2017.

To hear Ron's LRC show go to the WMBR archive page and hit the Late Risers Show for Monday 1/22.

PODCASTS.........

The Elastic Glam Breakfast show this week was curated by Def Leppard lead singer Joe Elliot. Joe has a glam loving background. He sings in both David Bowie and Mott the Hoople tribute bands.

Sethyspice took a list of Elliot’s favorite 70s glam songs from a list on the Louder Sound web site. That was a great idea and that gave songs by Jobriath, Chicory Tip, T Rex, Slik, Nick Gilder, John Rossall, Kenny and Starz.

There were a few glam collaborations between Elliot/Def Leppard with The Struts, Brian May, Ghost, and the BBC Orchestra (Bowie’s “Life on Mars”).

It’s a another great dose of glam.

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

BeatersBand Marc Valentine

The Beaters Band from Italy do up “Danny Says” the Ramones song from the End of the Century album. The Ramones begin the song soft and without guitars and the arrangement doesn’t add that Ramones crunch till halfway through. The Beaters Band just puts the full buzz saw guitar in at the beginning and rocks through it all. What a concept! Seems like an obvious idea, in retrospect.

Marc Valentine is getting a push from Wicked Cool Records for his album Basement Sparks. The single “Strange Weather” is out now. It is a nicely produced pop song. The singer has a real nasal sound to the vocals that we like.

Valentine has a few local gigs in March. It’s the Music Room in Yarmouth on March 21. Then the Burren on March 22. Those sound like a very promising shows!
