Nervous Eaters digital single
Nervous Eaters new digital single and video

The Matt Burns Memorial as been moved closer to home! It'll be at the Burren on Sunday July 28th.

Rock and Roll Rumble tickets and showThe 2024 Rock and Roll Rumble, Thurs. Apr 4 2024 - Sat. May 4 2024, now has tickets available. The single ticket, the "Full Boat Pass" for all 9 nights is $104.00. You can get them at the Middle East ticket site

Moving Targets toured Japan a year ago now they are doing a European tour; 17 shows in April and May. 15 are in Germany and one in France and one in Austria.

Alex Cox will begin filming the Repo Man sequel, Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer, The lead will be played by Kiowa Gordon who was in The Twilight Saga and the Dark Winds TV series.

Repo Man album cover Now, the movie is one thing but what about the soundtrack? The original had The Circle Jerks, Black Flag, Iggy Pop, Suicidal Tendencies, The Plug and Fear. They even had a Jonathan Richman song in there – “Pablo Picasso” by Burning Sensations.

A quote in Variety says that the filmmakers promise to: “deliver an enthralling mix of punk energy, existential comedy, and unconventional storytelling, navigating the absurd and chaotic world of repo men into a new age of nuclear brinkmanship and driverless cars.”

“Punk energy”…that’s good but what about punk music? We’ll have to wait and see. Here's an article in Screen Rant on the new Repo Man

VIDEOS......

The new material keeps flowing out. The Nervous Eaters have a new digital single and video of the song “Vampire”.

There is a lot of arrangement in this song. If you give it a careful listen, you can hear background vocals, leading riffs, instruments dropping in and out Nervous Eaters and chords that are strummed then are staccato. There’s always a sense of movement. Then there is the recorded sound. Everything is vibrant. This is the result of a lot of focus on the recording and mastering. That’s what you get with a good recording contract.

The idea of the vampire lover is always fertile, and Steve Cataldo knows how to instill his song characters with mystery that hint of things forbidden. The video takes advantage of vampire imagery. In the on stage live cuts Steve is constricted by duct tape, it's an arresting sight.

The other song in this digital single is Adam Sherman's song “Knockdown Day.” We first heard that song when Adam played it in his stint with the Billy Connors Project and the song made a huge impact. It was so bare and emotional. The first time we heard it, our reaction was “what was that?” Now, it gets the Nervous Eaters work up! We love hearing those 12 string fill ins. The first line mentions Christmas and if you hear this during the Christmas season and are emotionally vulnerable, it will get to you big time!

We see that there was a Mojo Nixon documentary that came out in 2023: The Mojo Manifesto: The Life And Times Of Mojo Nixon. We have the trailer above, but the movie is on a lot of streaming sites like Amazon Prime and for free on Hoopla, the digital library site.

The revitalized Tree has been gigging like crazy all over. Now get ready for some new recordings. Right now the song “Cheats at Golf” comes with a video. Dave Tree asks, if a person cheats at golf, what else will he cheat about? Dave does that Tree style which is very much in your face.

Taken by Vultures now have a video for their song “Dr Klaw” that we highlighted last week. it's about “NYC's Illegal Underground Lobster Roll Dealer.” It’s an unusual subject to get worked up about, but the group does. The video is rife with lobsters and lobster rolls. It looks like they lined up videos and used AI to insert lobsters in the images, clever in its way.

Life of the Record is a well done podcast. They really get the goods in their interviews. That’s true with this one of Ian MacKaye talking about the making of the Out of Step EP and the circumstances around it. It’s has so much detail and insight. There’s no padding in its hour and a half-length. MacKaye talks a lot about the song “Out of Step” which is such an important song. Ian talks about each song in turn. The video is full of great photos and flyers.

RADIO......

There was some technical problem with Ron’s Monday Late Risers Club show this week. The sound was way off. We had to hit the links that Ron always supplies in Track-Blaster (what a hard worker!) to hear some of the show with good fidelity.

Archie and the Bunkers from Cleveland have been around for a while. They have a real garage sound with heavy organ. The video has real style. It reminded us of low budget Italian horror movies from decades ago. It was so entertaining that it wasn’t until near the end when we realized it was a duo – just drums and organ. Very very cool. Catch this one on the video if you can

What a wild collection Cruelster from the UK has put out. The Lost Inside My Mind In Another State of Mind album sounds like a group collective pounding away with total abandon. Ron played “Let’s Make Noise (In the Bathroom).” We have that in embedded below. There are 22 other songs though. You can hear those on the Bandcamp page

He played some punk closer to home…NYC exactly. Mala Vista's “Don’t Owe You” sounds like a punk throwback, back when there was a dose of pop in it. Then for a twist the solo sounds like a surf guitar break. Odd elements to join together but interesting and it works.

To hear Ron’s Monday LRC show go to the WMBR archive page, hit the LRC show for Monday 2/19.

This Tuesday 2/27 Skybar will have an interview with Rick Barton on his Rising show on WMFO 91.5 FM at 8 pm.

Rick will be calling in from his Florida hang to talk about his two album release Nowhere Man and Comin Home which will be out this Friday on Rum Bar.

PODCASTS........

The Elastic Glam Breakfast show was filled with glam tunes of interest this week.

We never heard Super Angel doing “Roller Skate Rockin’” this is Glam infused with Chuck Berry riffs, very unusual. It’s from 1980.

DJ Sethyspice played Brian Eno’s song “Dead Finks Don’t Talk” on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Here Come the Warm Jets album. That 1974 album was influential in so many ways.

Clone is a current glam band that is bringing glam back to rock again. This show had the song “Set the Night on Fire.” Velvet Insane is another current band that we have come to know through Elastic Glam. Their song “Looking for a Rock (About to Roll”)’ is from a 2023 album. Tuk Smith and the Restless Hearts’ “Take the Long Way” is another example of current glam.

They also played locals Jennifer Tefft with their new song “Caffeine”.

The Watchtelligence podcast talked it up with Rick Berlin. Rick’s had such a long and creative career. He’s made his own way and done his own thing. He started with success with Orchestra Luna and has been in a long succession of other groups that were all marked by his strong songwriting. He talks about how the theatrical and the rock combine in his voice and writing.

Rick in Orchestra Luna had gigs at CBGB’s and hung with the Talking Heads. He talks about the big show with the Violent Femmes recently. Rick is in the twelve year of running the Jamaica Plain Music Festival.

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

Mas Cherry Happy Little Clouds

The Key of Caustic story got messy real quick. The group split from founder Jimbo Jones and took the name with them. Jimbo Jones started a Facebook page with the name 'Real Key of Caustic.' Jimbo has now taken a different tack and a positive attitude; he’s off and running on his own and has a new group called Mad Cherry. He got right back in the game and recorded and released this new song “Contemplation.. The song is punk and raw but melodic. It’s got a great group sound. Way to go Jimbo!!

Happy Little Clouds are getting good press these days. You can see why with “The Emperor’s Song." It seems like they are externalizing an internal struggle. The song pumps along and seems to have an upbeat view. That’s helped with the organ riffing along. The vocals lift the whole affair. They are engaging and full of optimism. This is the precursor to an album. We’ll be hearing more about this group as the year goes on.

Black Beach Goes POp COmp Album

It’s nice to see some new music from Black Beach! Their last release was an EP in 2021. This new song “Psychic War” is a favorite right off. They tag themselves as noise rock and post punk. In “Psychic War” they work up the noise and racket but at the bottom is a bass line that repeats and never varies. That bass line isn’t just hypnotic or mesmerizing, it supports, and give form, to all that is happening above it sonically. It carries the whole 4:25 minutes of the song. It’s a thing of beauty!

“Secret World” has more variety to it and a more traditional song structure. Guitar here is replaced with a keyboard and the vocals are heavily echoed which is what they do live.

Now That's What I Call Heartbreak Volume 6: Comp Goes Pop is a benefit album for Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF). It's 24 cuts of cover tunes. It starts with REM’s “The One I Love” by Bad Idea. Massive Nightmares does The Lemonheads “Into Your Arms”. Lesser Nightmares does Doris Troy’s 1963 hit “Just One Look”. Those songs are by full bands. A lot of the other tracks are acoustic performances. This is Volume 6, the other volumes are on the Bandcamp site to hear.
