The BGN News Archive

April 3, 2023

We've got some extra reading for you this week!

Captain Easychord reports on a Sally O’Brien’s show with Linnea’s Garden, Baabes and Happy Little Clouds. Sally O’Brien’s, like all other clubs, is slowly getting back to shows... and more shows like this we hear!! Click the photo above to go to Captain Easychords review.

Also John Keegan interviewed Dan “Bootleg” Anklin. Dan’s been active and wide-ranging in his booking. The object is to spread the Boston scene outside the city. He gives you an insight to what is going on right now with booking. He also works on distribution for Red on Red Records. Click the photo link below to access the interview.

Dan Anklin

Sunday night we found out that there will be no more shows at Charlie's Kitchen in Harvard Square. No reason on given. There is good news, the shows that were scheduled will move to State Park in Kendall Square, Cambridge starting April 17. Good move State Park. State Park Facebook page.

Another record store opening up! Can it be true? Yes!! Music Research Library has opened up on Beacon Hill at 24 Joy Street. They had a store in Providence RI and people were driving down from Boston, so they got the obvious idea and there they are on Joy St.!

Record StoreThey like to find rare records from around the world for discriminating listeners. They have listening stations for customers to preview records. Another twist is that they specialize in “library music.” That’s generic stock music that is used in films or ads. Here’s their Instagram page and their FB page

We should also note that Jaime Thalia's store Pleasant Village Records and Collectibles is still open! She got notice to move but that has changed and the store is still going strong. It's at a little strip-mall 191 Pleasant street, Marblehead MA, on the second floor! Go visit!

Also we interviewed Jaime when the store first opened, you can read the interview here.

Riche Parsons dropped a revelation this week on Facebook: “I intend on recording my last Punk EP. 4 songs. #1 Punk, Shit Show, Uncle Bill, and Go Shit In Ya Hat...... more news to come!" Wow! That's some big news....

Rock and Roll Rumble The Rock and Roll Rumble is getting more attention than ever this year because of its three year Covid hiatus.

Rock and Roll Fables website has some good primers for the contest. They have posts for the first three nights. They give a short run down on the group and post a song so you can hear what they sound like. It’s a bang up job.

Here is Day One, Day Two, and Day Three …and that’s your homework for the week.

Here’s another way of hearing the Rumble groups: Smitt E. Smitty was the host of On the Town with Mikey Dee this last Wednesday. He had Angelle Wood in the studio and they lined up all the Rumble groups and played cuts from them all.

Listen to that show in the archive version by going to the WMFO Schedule page and hitting On the Town with Mikey Dee at 9pm then hit the archive button.

Nervous EatersWMFO also had Brad Hallen of the Nervous Eaters as a guest on Mike on the Mic show. Brad has had an amazing career. He’s goes over a long list of groups he's played with.

He had some hot news for future Nervous Eaters' releases. The Eaters have 15 new songs written and they're going into the studio on April 16. This album won't be out till 2024. However, before that they will have two physical single records with non-album b-sides. On top of that will be three digital tracks that will be new and not on the album.

To hear that going to the WMFO Schedule page, hit Mike on the Mic show at 9am Saturday then hit the archive button

It was 46 years ago when The Damned played at The Rat in March of 1977. We tried to interview them...well we DID interview them ... but they interviewed themselves at one point instead.....

Dave VanianRat and Captain begin to conduct their own interview…..

Rat Scabies- So how did you get together?

Capt. Sensible- Well I was an anteater and I…..

Rat- Who writes the songs?

Sensible- Ah….a carpet!

Rat- How do you like the United States compared to England?

Sensible - Thirty squares past Pythagoras, roots of the pi…

Rat- But what do you think of the anteater's semen?

Sensible - Yes, I love it!

That’s just a small bit of the anarchy and off the rails talk that happened that day. It was a wild time that never can be duplicated. Read it here: Boston Groupie News Interviews The Damned.

KnyvetFrom where the BGN sees things one of the most effective people on the Boston rock scene is Michael O’Conner Marotta. Name not familiar? He was the editor of the Phoenix for a while. He is editor-in-chief and co-founder of Vanyaland. Now he runs a publicity/social media company called Knyvet (formaly Publi_sist).

He has local bands for clients and we are constantly kept informed about the bands projects and accomplishments. It’s one of the best sources of new info.

We mention all this because Marotta is giving a talk at Berkeley on April 13 at 4-5:30 PM. The lecture is titled How to Promote Your Music. Local bands, we love you, but you need this information!! We know from experience this guy has the goods. Sadly this talk is only for Berkely students but we hope Marotta will present this info for local bands SOON!! Here’s the Facebook page for this event anyway in case you are a Berkeley student.

VIDEOS......

The NYHC Chronicles had a show with Kim Kane and Marshall Keith of the Slickee Boys this week. The Slickee Boys played Boston a few times back in the day. They were a transitional band that lead to punk in the Washington DC area. They opened for the Cramps and the Plasmatics. A lot of early hardcore musicians have Slickees as an influence. The Slickees played a lot. They played the DC club the 9:30 Club over 80 times.

Many of us followed Jenn Lombari and Patrick, her amazing dog, on Facebook for a long time. When Patrick died we all felt a loss. Now Jenn has done a video for “Driving With Your Ghost” a song about Patrick.

The song tugs at our heart. To hear Jenn’s distinctive voice singing about Patrick does it to us. In the video we see just a few shots of Patrick what hit even harder is the ‘ghost’ of Patrick, that fact that he’s NOT there as Jenn does her walk with the empty leash.

This is a wonderful tribute to a best friend.

JFA the classic skateboard punk group has a new album, Last Ride, coming out on June 9. Now they have a video to go along with the song “Stage Dive.” The stage diving photos in the video belong to Ed Colver. He covered California punk back in the hey day and has a catalog of action photos.

“Stage Dive” talks about just that. At the end the singer takes a dive and low and behold the people “part like the Red Sea.” The singer hits the floor – a photo showing just that, from the real singer Brian Brannon, is the final photo of the vid.

Sex Pistol bassist Glen Matlock releases his second single from his forthcoming album Consequences Coming. “This Ship” rolls along smoothly from beginning to the end. The dynamics shift from verse to chorus to give it interest. He makes it sound effortless.

RADIO......

Ron on Monday’s Late Risers Club did his usual good job of bringing on the latest punk.

As much as we liked the songs he was playing one actually stopped us short ... because of the feeling of menace in the song. The group Shit Present from Exeter UK had the song “Voice in Your Head.” The lyrics had the ‘voice in the head’ dictating ultimatums because, of course, it is in control. It’s a graphic depiction of schizophrenia or some psychic disorder. Hear it below.

“Cue” by Perth group Last Quokka is a group smashing out a roaring sound.

Ingrid and the Ministers are not from Australia but close by ,,. New Zealand. “Boofhead” hits its stride and you will go with it till the end, guaranteed. The singer is making a point but what it is specifically we don’t know. This one comes via video.

The hear Ron’s whole show go to the WMBR Archive page and hit the link on the Monday 10am show for Feb 20.

PODCASTS.........

First Wave LodoWe are happy to say that the interview we did with Peter Abzug on his podcast First Wave is now poster to listen to. First Wave is situated in Ashville, NC at WPVM FM. The show is now also has an English outlet on Rox Alive (https://www.roxalive.co.uk/). The show starts with some Ramones, Elvis Costello and Sex Pistols. We did a lot of talking in the Zoom interview. Peter has done an excellent editing job and our review of the Boston scene through the decades is snappy and a lot of points are made without being drawn out. Next Peter fill the rest of the time out with groups we mention: Pixies, Mission of Burma, Real Kids, Lyres and Neats. You can hear the show which is First Wave Show #23 here.
This was a very enjoyable interview and we want to thank Peter here for the opportunity to spread the excitment of the Boston punk scene.

This week Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico has Chris Horne and Lynda Mandolyn from Tiger Bomb on as guests. Steev delves into Chris’ time in her previous group The Brood which lasted for 17 years.

Chris and Lynda relate how they hooked up. That was in 2014. Chris admits they have even dipped into bubblegum music a bit as they both combined to create music.

Tiger Bomb is going to play at the "Wild Weekend" in Mallorca, Spain and The Brood will do one show ... with Jen D’Angora on bass!! Here's the Wild Weekend website. it's a 60s Garage Fuzz Grind Music & Pop Culture Fiesta with International Beat Bands, and Tiki Decor, Vinyl DJs, Poolside Twist Parties, SwapMeet, Trash Trivia, Teasarama.

Steev also posted a second show with an interview of Paul Kolderie who did an amazing amount of work at Fort Apache. Groups he worked with were: Pixies, Lemonheads, Throwing Muses, Hole, Radiohead, Warren Zevon and more.

He started as a member of the Sex Execs of “Tami-itis” fame. One big revel is that Paul is working on a box set of La Peste material. They compiled as much material as they could get and are making it sound as good as possible.

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

Answerman Mad Pointer

We featured a single by Answerman two weeks ago. “Black Heart” had an indie/garage sound and we liked that. Now they have another song that will be on their upcoming album Black Light Poster. “No Complaints” has a very raw guitar sound. There’s immediacy in the recording that is, we imagine, hard to get. Oh ya, this group has our attention now!

You hear the drums, then bass, then guitar slot in one by one at the beginning. We could listen to just that for a few minutes but the vocals do their job singing about “sticking it out in toxic situations” as the band explains in their publicity statement.

These song teasers have done their job, we’re dying to hear the whole album.

Listening to Mad Painter's new CD Splashed it only a few seconds to hear the Deep Purple, ELP, Iron Butterfly and other 60s and 70s influences.

Canned Heat came to the mind during “River” an upbeat blues. “Roll Samurai” was a fave which come complete with an Al Hendry drum solo in the middle that carries into the song proper a bit.

Halfway through the 17 songs the rock retreats some and the ballads and traditional songwriting gains hold. “Lie to Me” is an example of the big ballad sound you don’t often hear anymore.

Alex is a strong presence on vocals and keyboards but the band makes things work by doing what it takes to give appropriate feel to every song and the background vocals by Julie Gee find a few different ways to add to the lead voice, sometimes they are the angelic choir, other times they duplicate the lead. They are always tasteful. Kenne Highland impresses on bass ... Add bass playing to his long resume. We heard Al Naha do wild psych and punk work with other groups but here he plugs in wonderful crisp leads and fills that fit the bill every time.

Alex Gitlin is an eccentric musician and in Boston we know and love our maverick musicians. Mad Painter are doing their own thing. This album is a good showcase for what they do.

Astral Bitch Queest for Tuna The Slamdenistas

New band alert: Astral Bitch is a Boston band. Their new digital single is on Bandcamp. “You’ve Got It Wrong” manages to combine some acoustic sections with heavy psych guitars and it’s seamless.

“Hard To Breathe” is over five minutes and you get an even better idea of the band sound. We get a bit of a goth feeling from this too.

They recorded this at Dead Moon Studios. That’s the recording studio situated in the Armory Building in Somerville. They do good work.

In honor of Jay Allen's 60th Birthday we give you “Toaster Oven” by Quest for Tuna and written by Evan Shore!! it was recorded 34 years ago but people remember it. Jay has re-released the song for his birthday. Enjoy!

Shoot for the Stars by the Slamdinistas has become one of our go to albums to listen to. It’s just so appealing. The group plays an early 70s rock style and they seem to capture a certain something in almost every song. There’s no flash, just solid low key arrangements that click.

Our favorite songs are “Brand New Day”, “Time Flies By”, “Cut Me Some Slack”, “There You Go Again”, “Boy/Girl”, “We Say Goodbye” and “Little Trouble Maker”. That’s 7 out of 9 cuts on the album.

This California band was picked up by Rum Bar. Lou Mansdorf must be having a ball picking out groups and albums like this and making them available. Has anyone else ever done anything quite like this at what is basically a local level?

There are four songs on Bandcamp now where you can get the album.
