The BGN News Archive

April 10, 2023

There's one thing you cannot stop...time ... and you are getting older every minute...well Jay Allen, who everyone knows and loves, celebrated his big Six-Oh!! birthday last week and John Keegan was there to capture the festivities and the feeling of community as lots of friends gathered together to share the good time at The French American Club in Waltham. Bands doing short sets were Justine and The Unclean, Tom Baker's Double Down, Muck and The Mires, Stop Calling Me Frank, The Shang-Hi-Los, The Spackles, Jay Allen and The Archcriminals, Spiller, The Dogmatics ... Check out John's slide show and page in the link above.

Lydon Noraand ... Nora Forster died this week. Nora the wife of Sex Pistol John Lydon and the mother of Ari Up from the Slits, was suffering from Alzheimer’s for several years.

John was her full-time caregiver. John’s contentious public image was turned on its head when he talked about his wife and her situation. Then he was so human and open about his love for his wife and the loss he knew was coming.

Husker Du will release Tonite Longhorn, a two disc vinyl record for Record Store Day (4/22) with a digital release on 8/25 on Reflex Records. It's an unheard live album from 1979-80. The album includes original flyers and artwork (much of which was created by the late Grant Hart) and liner notes by Thurston Moore.

It includes an early version of the song “Do You Remember?” Husker Du means ‘do you remember’ in Danish and Norwegian. It was also a memory game for all ages.

You can hear that cut on YouTube and read more about this on Brooklyn Vegan where they also have the track listing.

There were many articles on the death of Seymour Stein, founder Sire Records. For those of us in the early days of punk those yellow Sire labels were so identifiable. They seemed to be on the turntable a lot. The label meant the music would be good.

Lyres Sire Lyres

The DMZ album was on Sire. That was exciting at the time. Talking Heads, Blondie, Ramones, Richard Hell & the Voidoids, Dead Boys, Pretenders and Replacements are just some of the other artists on the label.

As time goes by we realize how much, as fans, that we depend on business people like Stein to make the music available to us. At the time we took it for granted.

Stein also helped create the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and helped to popularize the term ‘new wave’ as a less scary way to introduce new punk music.

Article on Stein on caledonianrecord.com and Variety and Classic Rock magazine

The Rock & Roll Rumble was happening this week. The first night went to Kooked Out, Second night Not Bad Not Well won. Night three went to One Fall (musta been that bass players hair antics!!)

VIDEOS......

Greg Hawkes

You can now see the video for Eddie Japan’s song "Time Machine." That’s the song with Greg Hawkes (of the Cars) playing on it. He’s also in the video playing a mad scientist. It's good seeing Greg out there again playing and having fun with it.

The Damned

This is just a few months old. It shows Dave Vanian and Captain Sensible on a news show getting interviewed. They are very calm and proper. We’re not used to that. They seem like two very reasonable people.

RADIO......

Bay State RockBay State Rock was back after the last show was postponed because Carmelita had Covid. Three weeks later you could still hear congestion in her voice.

She began the show with a Berlin Airlift song. Rick Berlin has had a good couple of weeks. He’s received a lot of publicity and attention with his big show at the Brighton Music Hall. In the process he also helped the Nervous Eaters get into the spotlight yet again by having them on the bill.

Carmelita clued us into two new releases: the new Key of Caustic single “Where Did It Go?” – we talk about that in the new music section below.

The other one was American Ocelot, a new group formed in 2022. Sara Billingsley is in this, but she is not listed in the Bandcamp credits for the new album Million Things. The group is a bright indie pop sound. The guitar player, Ken Rothman, doesn’t dazzle but seems to play exactly what’s needed with a tone that makes the tune. We liked the song “Million Things” that Carmelita played as well as “Unravelled,”“Fly Away” and “Spare Me” from the album.

American OcelotThis is an excellent album especially for a new band right out of the gate!!

On Saturday’s A Crash Course for the Ravers the American Ocelot members Sara Billingsley and Joanie Lynch were guests. They said that many of the song were recorded before the current line-up. We will see as time goes on to see how the group shakes out.

The group will be playing their first show at the Jungle this Friday. Here’s the Facebook page for that

Listen to that ACCFTR show go to the WMFO Schedule page and hit Crash Course for the Ravers at 1pm on Saturday then hit the archive button.

The album is on Bandcamp

WMBR RadioOn Jon Bernhardt’s Friday Breakfast of Champions show on WMBR the first nine songs were all titled “Panic.” He had another nine songs that had the word ‘panic’ in the title. That was a piece of work. The show was a rebroadcast.

To hear Jon’s whole show go to the WMBR Archive page and hit the link on the Friday 8am show for April17.

Tuesday (4/21) Skybar will have Joanie Lindstrom from WMBR as a guest. They'll talk about her long career in local radio.

Listen on Tuesday at 8pm on WMFO at 93.5 fm or after go to the archive page and hit Tuesday at 8pm then hit the archive button.

PODCASTS.........

Rock and Roll RumbleThe Rock and Roll Rumble continues to get attention. Anngelle Wood gets interviewed on the podcast Authentic Leadership for Every Day People. There is a lot of Rumble talk and also discussion on the status of the club scene. The situation with the Middle East and the allegations that now are years old are addressed. The podcast is an hour long and Anngelle gets a lot of info and insider stories jammed in there. You can hear it here

This week Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico has Mel Lederman of Victory at Sea as a guest. Victory at Sea started in 1995 and were active till 2007. They toured a lot and had a few releases.

Mel said the band split up during a tour in Europe. They did five tours in Europe and some were six weeks long. Mel played with Thalia Zedek from 2006 to 2017. They begin the show with Mel’s new song “The Saboteur.” Mel is playing on July 22 at the Jungle for a matinee show.

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

Key of CausticKey of Caustic have been supplying a steady stream of singles for a while now. “Where Did It Go” is the latest. Like the others it has a nice rough punk sound. There’s a little melodic hook in the singing right at the beginning of the song that continues throughout and we love that! The simple solo fits the song to a T. These guys have all the right instincts.
