Chelsea Curve iin the rumble

Congrats to Chelsea Curve and One Fall on winning their semi-final nights at the Rumble!! They go on to the Finals at Sonia on May 6.

BellformgeThe Medfield State Hospital was the location for some of the scenes of the movie Shutter Island. It is now the Bellforge Arts Center and they've been having occasional outdoor shows. The owners are in the process of converting some of the buildings. Eventually the chapel will be transformed to an inside music venue that will have a capacity of 325. They will also have a recording studio and artists residences. One of the spaces was used by Paper Tigers for their video of “Portrait of a Scene.

Right now they have a definite calendar of events...including The FieldFest Music Festival in May, a series called Summer Sounds and Buffalo Tom in September. See their events calendar here. More info on The Boston Globe ... if you can get by the paywall.

GlowboxGlowbox has a new song out. "Joke's On You" is available on Bandcamp. Check it out!!

U-Ey at the Buoy released "Sideways" in February - you can listen to it on YouTube!

There's a Love and Rockets reunion tour in the making. It's the first time they've played together in 15 years!! Their first gig is in May at the '80s-oriented Cruel World Festival in California. And they are in good company for that event with Siouxsie Sioux, Iggy Pop, Echo & The Bunnymen, Billy Idol, Adam Ant, The Human League, Gary Numan, Modern English, Gang of Four, The Vapors, and The Motels ... among others. The closest L&R come to Boston is Brooklyn in June.

Brooklyn Vegan nice in-depth interviewed Daniel Ash along with a few L&R videos. Check it out here.

VIDEOS......

The Damned have another video of a song from their upcoming album Darkadelic. They have a spy theme for “You’re Gonna Realize” video.

The band is looking and sounding in top form.

Moving Targets have a video with some shots of their recent tour. The soundtrack is the entire new In The Dust album. It’s another chance to hear that worthy album.

PODCASTS.........

Chris Anzalone was on Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico this week. Chris has a lot going on. He’s a drummer that fills in all over the place. He just came off a tour playing with Juliana Hatfield and he's on the Juliana Hatfield’s album covering the Police... and on her next album. Chris grew up in Medford and started in bands when he was 15.

We didn’t know he played for Roomfull of Blues from 2016 till last June, and with Johnny Hoy and the Blue Fish from 2000 to 2015. He is also part of Peppermint Kicks with Sal Baglio and Dan Kopko.

Then he talks about opening Stereo Jack's in Ball Square Somerville. That is such a uplifting story coupled with the resurgence of vinyl records. Steev questions Chris on the business side of the store and that’s interesting.

Lou Mansdorf got the love on the Born Too Late show on WMFU.

They have Lou talking up the back stories on how he became familiar with all the groups he releases on Rum Bar Records. You get the idea that it's the Rum Bar family from Lou. He not only loves the music he releases but loves the people who make it. It’s refreshing in these critical and cynical days to hear the good feelings flow. Lou talks about making the bands and the people who love the bands into a community, it’s fans and family. We think he’s doing exactly that.

They play plenty of Rum Bar releases in the Two Part interview. Part One of the interview focuses on the new Rum Bar Releases. It starts with the latest which is the Eddie Japan release Pop Fiction. (Hear that below.)

Part Two 9hear below) talks about some of the other Rum Bar Releases and longtime acts on the label. Bands are The Dents, Tom Baker, Much and the Mires, The Short Fuses and more.

NEW MUSIC/CDs.....

One of our faves, Today Junior, just released a self-titled twelve cut album. To us they can do no wrong. All the material is fresh sounding. Their sound is their own, once you dial into it you always can recognize it. The drums and bass stay tightly knit to the guitar chording. We like their sound and that they capture feelings and situations vividly. Themes are love found and lost and times gone by.

Only two songs have been pre-released. “In Massachusetts,” which is a love letter to the area, and “Sweet Little Nothings” about being completely lost in love.

Other highlights for us are “Second Guessing,” “Lost in Reality,” “Shit” and “Let It Go” but everything hit the mark with us.

Mach Bell is back in the saddle with the Mach Bell Experience. The rocker turned author turns back to rock!! “Power Fever” is some metal that isn’t that far from Thundertrain. A little talk in the middle by Mach also recalls the Train days – that’s his trademark move.

Gollilagging

Sunshine Riot’s new four song EP Loud, Bright, Violent was recorded in Chicago by Steve Albini. Actually that’s not new for the group because their last EP was done with Albini too.

The two previously released songs “So It Goes” and “Looking At The Past” were super impressive. The two new songs are right up there with those.

The group sound perfectly captures the frustration and turmoil in the lyrics. When they keep repeating “we don’t want to die alone” in “Room To Moan,” boy, do you feel that. It’s the same with the phrase “man on the TV has nothing to say” in the song “Man on the TV”.

Sure the Albini engendering is a boost but this group has the goods. This is an angst filled brooding classic!!

Fauna is a combo EP by three new Allston groups. Gollylagging, going222jail and Dino Gala. These groups have played mostly house shows but did have a show at the Crystal Ballroom for a the record release of this EP.

Gollylagging hits the hardest but still are strongly melodic with an emo edge. It's easy to imagine they make an big impression live.

The going222jail have an indie slant and some detailed guitar work that is very distinctive.

In “Southern Hospitality” Dino Gala use expansive vocals to give themselves an identity and follow it up with some soaring guitar work. This really got our attention. They're a band to keep an eye on as are the other two.

If you want to keep up with cutting edge new groups this EP is a must listen.

LovesickThe Elevator Drops were very popular in the late nineties. Now David Goolkasian, from that group, is back in a new group named Lovesick. David is joined by Heather Joy Morgan and together they create some pop rock not that far from The Elevator Drops with their new album Hoping This Is The End. It has well done synth lines that color the songs. Things never get too heavy but the guitar does crank up in spots.

The songs are well arranged and crafted. They are radio ready; we can see they may get a lot of airplay. You can hear various influences from pop to soul to 80s synth groups.

“Something Going On” has some real catchy parts. “Blue Skies On Mars” is the song most likely to be a hit, everything seems to click together in it. The nasal voice is distinct and fits into the arrangement which has some glam/Bowie overtones.

You can order the limited first pressing on the Lovesick website
