Punk: Rage and Revolution Exhibit in England

Dave TreeTREE has been out and playing everywhere – north shore, south shore and in town. They played the Jay Potts memorial show at the Magic Room on Sunday. Adam 12 at WBOS did a ten minute interview with Dave Tree but it seems longer because Dave jams a lot of info in there. Even more important is Dave’s positive and practical outlook. If you don’t get excited and inspired to get active when listening to him you are dead to the world.

To hear the interview go to the 92.9 WBOS website

The Dogmatics are all over the place taking advantage of their Dogumentary. They were all over the place back in the day too. They've posted the entire set from there in studio live set at WERS from 1984. It’s a smoking set. It begins with a cover of Teenage Head’s “Picture My Face,” Dogmatics WERS recording boy were we captivated by that song!
They play the hits like “Gimmie the Shakes,”“Pussy Whipped,”“Sister Serena” and “Hardcore Rules” but all 15 songs are rocking and sharp. There’s superb guitar work by Peter all the way through. WERS did a fine job capturing the group in this recording.

In a sign of the times they mention in the intro to “MTV OD” that the South End will soon be getting ‘cable TV’.

Here the WERS show.

Canadian rockers Danko Jones have a new song that must be some peoples ideal summer song. “Good Time” has a chorus: “I came here to fuck shit up, and have a good time.” It’s a rocking tune and you can imagine that people might get carried away.

If you like that tune you should check out the rest of their songs because they are right in line with “Good Time”.

VIDEOS......

There is a new exhibition in England at the Leicester Museum called Punk: Rage & Revolution. It’s has a large display of punk memorabilia and tells the story of English punk along with it: “Tracing punk’s origins and influences as well as its ideology, attitude, fashion, music, art and legacy, the exhibition features an incredible collection of original punk items, artwork and clothing that needs to be seen to be believed. Alongside items from Seditionaries, BOY and Sex, there are original items loaned by Leicester punks and museum collections, and the exhibition also boasts the first retrospective of original clothing from the late Dame Vivienne Westwood since she died.”

You can see by the videos that there is a lot of material. The video to the left is by YouTube poster Art of the Punk and the video to the right is by kevk57. All very interesting. The exhibit goes till September 3…with a "Punk Festival Weekender" 18-20TH August, if you’re thinking of doing the flight and taking it in! it's only a 2-hour train ride from London.

Here is an article on the show in Punktuation Magazine which has a promo video from the exhibitors

A Million Miles Away is a documentary about Peter Case. Looking back it seems unlikely that three talented guys like Case/Lee/Collins would end up in the same trio, Nerves. Case went on to lead The Plimsouls. The song “ A Million Miles Away” stands as one of the greatest power pop songs ever and ruled the world with it’s place in Valley Girl in 1983. Peter has a history before and after that 10 years in rock.

The film is now on all video on demand services. It can be seen on Amazon for $3.99. We saw it on our online digital section of our local library for free, you should check that option.

After seeing the film you can check out our own local journalist Harold Lepidus and his podcast where he talks an hour and half with Peter and comes up with some local color. See that above left.

The Plimsouls had a tremendous reputation for their live show. See them play Hollywood in 1980 at the Starwood in the video, above right. They cover “Time Won’t Let Me”.

Venomous Pink

We’ve posted videos from Arizona punkers The Venomous Pinks before. They were very good but they didn’t have the ferocity of their current “We Must Prevail.” It's about abortion rights - the imagery is provoking and the intensity of the message is fierce. The music is all the better for it as they get intense to bring home the message. The band has really found their voice with this!!

Urban HEat

Joanie played a song by Urban Heat from Austin on her LRC show this week. We thought it was a current and worthy take on Goth. The song is not any streaming services but it’s on YouTube.

The group sings, “Trust there’s just no future left for us” and the music suits that nihilistic outlook.

More about Urban Heat on the New Noise website and on the band's website

RADIO......

Anngelle Wood has her first Boston Emissions show since she's been busy with the Rumble.

There’s a lot a good material: Paper Tigers’ “Wedding Cake”, and Danny the K’s “Roller Derby Girl”. There’s some brand new songs: “Fever Dream” by Texas Instruments and “Burn Scar” by Kind.

There’s vids to on the website by Trailer Swift (love that name), Catching Hell, blindspot’s “Still Breathing” and “Knoxville by John Powhida.

SkybarOn Skybar’s Rising show he had an early copy of a new The Winter Project song called “Entropy” from their new album Chasing the Light. We don’t have long to hear the whole album because it will be released on July 14. “Entropy” is one of three new songs and there will also be some remastered songs from the last few years.

Next Tuesday Skybar will have John Powhida as guest, he's been getting lots of airplay with his sharp “Knoxville” song.

Hear the Rising show on WMFO 91.5FM on Tuesday at 8pm, or after Tuesday go to the WMFO schedule page Hit the Rising show on 8 to 10 pm on Tuesday nights, then hit the ‘archive’ button.

WMBRWe can’t let Ben Kochen’s Tuesday Fourth of July show go by unmentioned! He did a lot of prep work on this. He started with five songs titled "Fourth of July." Then it was a whole show of songs with subjects of USA, Independence, American Dream, This Land etc.

He plays new and old: Down By Law – “Independence Day,”Piebald – “American Hearts.” The Avengers – “The American in Me”. One set was Anti-Flag, Husker Du, The Proletariat, Wipers and Naked Raygun. We loved that!!

To hear the show go to the WMBR archive page hit the LRC show for Tuesday 7/4.

Sonic OverloadThen there’s Al Quint’s in your face take on Sonic Overload. He begins with Seven Seconds “Fuck Your Amerika”. Other song titles were: “White Amerika,”“Sick Society,” “American Paranoia”, “Patriotic Cattle Call” and “American Rampage.” Like always it's two hours of hardcore that never pussyfoots around.

You can hear the show at Sonic Overload

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

Danny the K Jonathan says

Danny The K now has a second song on Bandcamp from his new EP Cigarettes & Silhouettes. “Skateaway” takes up where “Roller Derby Girl” left off.

These songs, like “Sugar Rush,” which will come out next week, take you to your ideal summer vacation where you had the best time of your life. They are irresistible and will give you a rush of great memories. How Dan can get that in his songwriting, we don’t know.

Dan has let out that there will be a video for “Sugar Rush” next week too.

“Jonathan Says” is a tribute to Jonathan Richman by The Wind-Ups. The group is led by Jake Sprecker who's been a sideman for Richman.

It’s very loud and raucous – not very Richman like but here it is. The rest of the four song EP will be released on August 4. One of the songs “Little Boy Blue” has Richman playing guitar on it.

Private Function Dammit records

Private Function from Australia are a punk/garage mix but that doesn’t peg them entirely. They are having some fun on their album 370HVSSV 0773H - right there, you should know they are a bit cray-cray. Is “One Headed Dog” a take on “Two Headed Dog” by Roky Erickson? Is “Seize & Destroy” connected to “Search & Destroy? We can't be sure....

They sound like Sweet on “General Mr. Meaner.” They punk up “Yellow” by Coldplay. Their own “Downright Dangerous” is a good punker.

We’re going to direct you to “Don’t Wanna Go Out On The Weekend” which is a bit perkier and more of a production than the other cuts and it has a neat cutting guitar solo.

We saw a story on the English label Dammit in Punktuation Magazine. They release regular punk albums but also some monthly compilations. They have 10 cuts of unreleased songs, all of them loud energetic punk. We suggest getting in there and checking it out for some good new songs.
