Fuzzstival returns

Good news, the Fuzztival is back. It September 15 and 16 (Friday and Saturday) and will happen at the Armory in Somerville.

There will be 11 bands each day. The Nice Guys and Boston Cream will be playing. To see the whole list of bands go to the Facebook event page

JacklightsThe Jacklights will have a new single, “Final Girl” coming out on September 7. An EP of the same name will be released on October 3.

The band has already has two other EP’s since their debut in August 2020. Their Bandcamp page

Purchase Street Records in New Bedford was voted best record store on the South Shore in the South Shore Almanac. Congrats to them. It’s another indication of record stores revival, in other past years there wouldn’t even be 'best record store' category.

Purchase Street Records is at their new location at 53 Popes Island, New Bedford. Facebook ... Website ... Instagram

BOOKS......

SSD bookThe SSD photo/essay book, How Much Art Can You Take? Book Launch (and signing) is at the Aloft Hotel (SSD has gone upscale!) on September 16th! Bring your book (or purchase one at the event) to get signed. Al, Jaime, Chris, Springa, Nancy, and Phili'n Phlash will all be there. Cash bar and food. Limited to 150 tickets.

Though the event is free you have to register for a ticket: as of this writing the event is almost sold out (35 tix left!)….check for tickets

VIDEOS......

The Drop Nineteens are back! They haven’t released anything since 1994. Their new album Hard Light is on Wharf Cat Records. The leading single “Scapa Flow” is out now with a video. Scapa Flow is where many German ships were scuttled after WWI. That subject flavors this somber tune, its tone is captured in the sepia colored video. It comes across as weighty and thoughtful. This is a nice indication that the almost 30 year hiatus the group is still sharp.

If you know Paul Armstrong now maybe it’s because you’ve seen him in his band 1.4.5. Paul’s music/band history goes further back than that. It begins in 1977 with The Flashcubes. Their song “Cherie Baby” got played locally a lot and the band played in Boston clubs back in 1978 and 1979. Paul posted all the bands shows this week on the Flashcubes Timeline

Flashcubes Pop Masters albumFlashcubes were part of the pop music that was happening at the same time as punk. They are even in the Power Pop Hall of Fame! This all comes up now because the Flashcubes have a new album, Pop Masters, coming out on August 11th on Big Stir Records. That prompted a Zoom interview by Matthew Street.

We find out immediately that Paul was born in England and when he was a child his family moved to Syracuse, NY. In the late 70s The Flashcubes made the punk circuit. Then Paul came to Boston in the early 80s with the 1.4.5. band.

The video starts with the new cover of “Forget About You” by the Motors from 1978. We learned a lot about Paul’s history in this and his passion for playing that has kept him going from the beginning.

1.4.5. will be playing the Square Root with Ray Paul with 28IF on August 19 - FB event page.

RADIO......

Gypsy Moths album Sounds OnLast Tuesday Skybar’s Rising show had The Gypsy Moths on. They have a new album called Sounds On. The group members have a long history in the Boston rock scene. On the show they do some songs live in between songs from the new album. The band gives some nice insights into the songs.

To hear the show go to the WMFO schedule page Hit the Rising show on 8 to 10 pm on Tuesday, then hit the ‘archive’ button.

PODCASTS.........

Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico interviews Tanya Donelly this week. Tanya grew up in Newport, RI. Her first music love was early punk. She knew of Kristian Hirsh since she was five. They both learned guitar and started Throwing Muses. Gary Smith helped the band move to Boston and get the group recorded.

There’s a lot to review from Breeders to Belly to solo work. They talk about the many musicians that Tanya has recorded with.

Currently there about a dozen Belly shows scheduled and then a few Breeders shows on the West Coast.

We’ve been dying to catch the Electric Glam Show from West Barnstable on the Cape but never could figure out the timing.

Elastic Glam Radio Show20Finally we saw it on a podcast on the Mixcloud platform.

They have Sinead O’Connor doing some glam! It’s a live cut of her covering Bowie’s “Life on Mars.” They have Slade drummer Don Powell doing a cover of “My Sharona.” The group Hello does a glam version of the sixties tune “Tell Him.”

Then there was the find that surprised us, a female tribute band named Slady (clever) doing a song titled “Slade Are For Life and Not Just for Christmas.” You have got to catch the vid for this too . The band mixes their tribute show with vintage real Slade shots.

So glad we got to hear this. The song selection is top notch. Hey, we’re hooked.

And here’s the second show they have on Mixcloud for 8/5. They play Suzi Quatro’s “Can the Can” and they actually have a show promo from Suzi herself! Now, that’s pretty great.

Rum Bar’s Malibu Lou was on the There Once Was A Note on Woody Radio Podcast on Saturday 8/5.

When you hear the stories of how Lou takes on a new band, that whole idea of the Rum Bar family comes up. One group leads to another naturally; it is an ever expanding circle. They talk about and play some later releases like: Danny The K, Kate Redgate, The Gypsy Moths, and Cruzados. Lou gets to play the bands on his label and talk about them…he’s in heaven.

Justine Covault was a guest on the show in May

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

Prozacs EP Erection album from Germany Hellebores from Australia

The Prozacs' new EP We Scream will be out on August 18. You can preorder now on Bandcamp. The EP has four songs and two covers of Lillingtons’ songs.

Right now they have the title track live on Bandcamp that you can hear. It’s the primo pop punk the group never fails to deliver.

Erection from Germany tell you to look out for the “Fake Punk.” It’s a short minute and a half punk blast. We never knew anyone pretending to be a punk…there never was much cachet in it to bother, but maybe it was different other places.

It’s just a funny rejoinder, but they make it a fast punk song. That would be “You’re the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly” by the Hellebores from Sydney, Australia. The music is sort of an ugly mess too, but it works. The album is titled Uncles.
