Dogmatic
The Dogmatics at Rockland High School

Saturday night was WRPS Rocks - Scholarship Fundraiser: A Dogumentary & The Dogmatics at Rockland High School Auditorium and The Dogmatics did a set after the film. They got a good crowd in the comfortable auditorium. The film is still going through the film festival tour. Director Rudy Childs noted that there was a distributor at the Harvard Film Festival showing at the Brattle and it looks like they will have a deal sometime soon.

Dogmatics DuoIt’s a special situation where you see a band documentary and then hear the band play live. It feels like you are seeing a ‘legendary’ act and that’s the case in reality too. The set after the film did show a band with a long history playing with all their strengths still evident in real time. The band was comfortable and loose on stage. They did get that school auditorium sound in the mix. That was different.

The Dogs played their sure fire favorites like “Sister Serena” and “Dancing by the Pool” and “Gimmie the Shakes.” Then they play new songs like “She’s the One” and “Drop The Needle” that hit the same highs. Not many groups can do that. They played a new song by their newest member James Young that fit into the bands repertoire like a glove and “Thayer Street” tugged at our hearts like it always does!

It looked like they were going to end with “Pussy Whipped” which they jammed on a bit but then went into “Pipeline” to finally end the show.

The Dogmatics are getting the benefits of the Dogumentary interest. The film is only going to get them more attention as it goes along and especially when it becomes available to the general public at some point. We love seeing this happen and enjoy seeing the band ride the wave.

Already DeadLocal punks Already Dead have strong blue collar roots, in fact their album was titled My Collar Is Blue. In honor of Labor Day and the Bread and Roses Festival in Lawrence, they've recorded a punk version of the traditional strike song “Bread and Roses” written in 1912. The song will be released on Friday September 1 just in time for Labor Day. We’re glad to see support for labor and a new interest in unions. Already Dead will be playing at the Bread and Roses Festival in Lawrence on September 4 at the Campagnone Common. Read more about Already Dead and the song on Knyvet website

We want to correct an error when we talked about Michele Haber last week. We said that Musella was a care organization but it is actually a foundation that supports research and provides information, Michele received her care at Pacific Neuroscience Institute. You can donate to Pacific Neuroscience Institute here

Feelies VU recordThe Feelies' new double album Some Kinda Love: Performing The Music Of The Velvet Underground, will be out October 13 via Bar/None Records. It was recorded at a live show they did in NYC in conjunction with a VU exhibit that was in NYC in 2018. Also in the show was Richard Barone and James Maestro of the Bongos.

This version of "Rock & Roll” on YouTube shows how good a job they did. More on the story on Brooklyn Vegan More videos of the Feelies playing VU on the Brooklyn Vegan website.

VIDEOS......

Walter Sickert & the Army of Broken Toys love to dress up on stage. That stagecraft makes them suitable for videos big time. “Goth Beach” was an example of how well they work in video.

Now we have “Keep My Head” where they've gone up another level. The costumes, story line, lyrics, music all work their magic as the sexy storyline flows along. It’s undeniably a sexy setup but TV has something to do with it too. You’ll see.

Local group Looking Glass War’s latest single ”I Can Tell By the Cars” got by us until we saw the video. Then the song hit us, which is why it’s always worth hearing a song different ways/formats.

The most striking thing about the song is the moodiness that is felt right off. The verse has vocals that are almost spoken and a simple chording that holds things down, then the chorus crashes in. The vocals get commanding and the guitars are a wall of distortion. That goes back and forth. Then there are the lyrics that somehow conflate a love attraction with cars. There are phases that get your attention…”sinewy divide”, “you’re recruiting clowns”, “extremist romance”, ‘amphetamines and flags”, “careening headlong” and “trolling stone”.

That is why it’s all the more important that the video is a lyric video. You get to take in the words and music at the same time. This group is living up to the attention it’s getting.

The New York Hardcore Chronicles with Drew Stone took on Dave Tree. It turns into a two hour interview. Dave covers so much territory. It’s his life, his career but then it’s everything and place that he interacts with. He got into the Rat the first time by taking Mr. Butch’s advice to try the back door. He’s got a few GG Allen stories.

Dave has such passion for music and art. It’s inspiring to take it in. Drew remarks after it’s over that Dave was one of the most intense individuals he’s had on the show.

The Dollyrots have a new album out soon. Right now they have a video/song for the first single “Night Owl” the album title song. It’s a nice looking performance video. The song is very straight ahead and easy to like which is why it’s been The Coolest Song In The World on the Underground Garage.

RADIO......

This Tuesday 8/29 on Skybar’s Rising show he will have Key of Caustic on for an interview. The band is on the verge of their Unleashed album release. The band has had a string of singles that were all rockin’ good music. We’re looking forward to hearing the new songs.

To hear the show listen at 91.5FM at 8 on Tuesday – after that go to the WMFO schedule page Hit the Rising show on 8 to 10 pm on Tuesday, then hit the ‘archive’ button.

On Monday’s Late Risers Club Ron played a song by a newer local group named Rong. “Cast Aspersions” takes you on a trip. It begins with some slow and low guitar riffs that lead to some fast and furious screamo that transitions to a section with plentiful clips from news shows that all begin “it’s a war on….”.

Those clips (which will sound very familiar) wake you up to the way you are manipulated as the news organizations ‘cast aspersions’ on what they don’t like. The lyrics deal with the same issue.

It’s not a tidy song, you have to give it attention but it has a very worthy lesson.

Ron played Theee Retail Simps from Portland, Oregon that shows the strong influence the Velvet Underground still has in 2023.

Check out their song “Easy Street" from the album Live on Cool Street. We love the VU more all the time. Amazing really.

Cleopatra Records released Goo Goo Muck, a Cramps tribute album a few weeks ago. Ron played the Courettes doing “Bikini Girls With Machine Guns.” Every song in this 12 cut album is worthy of the Cramps tribute. There’s lots of big rockabilly style guitar sounds here, except for the Fuzztones who go deep fuzz.

Also on the album are The Flaming Groovies and Linda Gail Lewis (Jerry Lee Lewis' sister). We like “Garbageman” by Blitzkid.

To hear Ron’s Monday LRC show go to the WMBR archive page hit the LRC show for Monday 8/21.

On Friday’s Gorilla Got Me show on WMBR Sara played “I Want It Too” a power pop nugget by The Uni Boys from the forthcoming album Buy It Now! It's worth checking out. She said they were channeling The Beat, The Jags, The Shoes and The Records, that’s high praise!! Here’s an article on the group

PODCASTS.........

Wow, Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico scooped Greg Norton from Husker Du for an interview!

He got Greg to talk about the beginning days of Husker Du which was interesting. It all happened around a record store. Greg is a wonderful interview. He has a great memory and is very forthcoming with the stories. Steev gave him plenty of space to talk.

Hard to believe Husker Du played Maverick’s back in the day. Greg was surprised it was sold out because it was their first show on the east coast.

Greg is now playing with Ultrabomb and is working on a second album with that group.

Here’s this week’s Elastic Glam Breakfast Show - they have another cut from the Suzi Quatro/KT Tunstall project. “Overload” has Quatro singing over some stomping sounds. And it gives us such joy to know groups like Glitter Wizard from San Francisco are still pumping out material like “Pogo Tonight”. Check them out on Bandcamp.

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

Brad Marino is on the verge of releasing Grin & Bear It. The album is fast on the heels of Ramones & Stones released in May.

One song, "Lucy" has been released now in advance. It has all the Marino trademark characteristics. It is a rolling power pop pleaser that has the attitude and vocabulary of an earlier time in rock. He even has a few “shoo-bops” near the end. This song works on us like a spell. We get lost in it right up to that last chord the plings out slowly.

Nick from Nick & the Adversaries/Lost City Angels has a new project, and album, called Team Doomsday. It a collaboration between Nick and Scott Mx Turner from New Orleans produced in the last few Covid years creative outlet.

Nick describes the album as: “A dystopian themed mix of different genres with themes of cold war, robot/AI take over, alien invasion, autocratic dictatorships and end time prophecies.”

Nick plays a tight ska, and add to that reggae and dub, all done well, that makes this an adventurous listen. “Downrange” actually uses the old doo-wop progression that we loved to hear in this context. We love the pronounced bass on all the songs. It’s often the first thing that hooks you. All songs have plentiful lyrics and they are not just filler but illustrate a scene that forwards their doomsday story.

“Initial Protocol” with its old school reggae sound is a fave with us. “Apparatchik Apparatus” is a zippy 2:30 minute ska tune that we gave repeated listens to. We've got to hand it to Nick, we weren’t waiting for something like this but it’s a very satisfying listen.

Kurt Baker’s album Rock N Roll club is eminent. To hold us over there is a second song to hear. “She Don’t Wanna Be Alone” is not quite a ballad, let’s call it a not fast pop song. Baker gives the nod to the Beatles for an influence on this. We can hear that but the whole feeling of the song just seems like pure Baker to us. That 12 string interlude at the 1:45 mark is short and simple but so sweet.

The rude Aussies are at it again. The group Semicolon has a song titled “The Penisth Song.” The chorus is “your penis is very very small” and you know, it’s catchy! It’s jokey and catchy…and punky.
