Roger Miller
Roger Miller playing his Vertigo Tremelo pedal

Two local companies have joined forces to create Source Audio’s Vertigo Tremolo guitar pedal. It includes six unique tremolo effects designed by Mission of Burma guitarist Roger Miller. The graphics on the pedal are from Vertigo Tremelo the Mission of Burma album VS.

Roger says, “While in Mission of Burma, Lou Giordano made me a custom tremolo pedal which made possible the extreme pulse for the song 'Trem 2.' Until I was introduced to the Vertigo, I had not been able to recreate that sound in any other device.”

If you’re a guitar person you will want to check this out. This is a further indication of how influential Mission of Burma is and how much regard Roger is getting as a guitar player. The web page for Source Audio

There are two videos on the page. We have those below. Roger talks about the pedal and Burma too. He gives Peter Prescott credit for being able to play along with the extreme tremolo of ”Trem 2”.

Anngelle Wood has published the dates for the 2024 Rock and Roll Rumble: April 4 to May 4. The venue will be the same as this year – The Middle East Up with the finals in Sonia. The official announcement is on the Rock and Rumble web page

BOOKS......

Bill Janovitz of Buffalo Tom is writing a book about The Cars. He's working with Greg Hawke, David Robinson and Elliot Easton. He invites anyone who thinks they can contribute to the story to contact him. Bill's Facebook page Bill’s book on Leon Russell was released this last year

VIDEOS......

The Jacklights have a new four song EP; “Final Girl” being released on October 3. You can preorder it on Bandcamp. They have the title song “Final Girl” up on Bandcamp to listen to now.

They also have this excellent video for it. It looks like it's self-done with an economy of shots that riff through three horror flicks; Bates Hotel, The Grudge and The Shining. There are twists in the retelling that show how they knew exactly what they wanted to do. They have the stylish Nilagia McCoy who is a natural for video. Just a lot to love about in this.

That’s not even talking about the song yet. It’s a simple punk song with a distorto guitar backing, a pumping bass and clear vocals. Like the video they accomplish a lot with little fuss. Nilagia’s voice has become very familiar to us these last few years and this song shows how effective it is.

The Jacklights are at at The Square Root along with Double Star (EP Release Party!), Harry & The Hot Flashes on Saturday October 20th.

Little Billy Lost has a new video out for “Dance Angelina Dance.” That song has gotten its share of radio play in town and on internet radio shows. We found ourselves taking a closer listen to the song with the video.

It's about a woman who is the center of attention where ever she is, she generates fascination. You can put "Angelina" in line with Sloopy, Gloria and many others. In addition we focused on that guitar solo…sounds like a Fred Pineau special. We noticed that strong descending bass line that sweeps the chorus along, that's a gem.

The video has some live shots interspersed with shots of the mythic Angelina. It has what we know recognize as Smitt E Smitty’s video production prowess.

Little Billy Lost is at The Square Root along with Psych-O-Positive from NYC and Classic Ruins on October 21st.

The Explosive Story of The Breeders & Last Splash is a new video giving the story of The Breeders. We learned a lot from this. They spend a good amount of time on “Cannonball” of course but you get the whole band story with a lot of details.

RADIO......

Ron started his Late Risers Club show this Monday with Nobro from Canada doing “Let’s Do Drugs.” It merrily skips along and you want to sing along with them. The intent might be ironic. They could be just parroting those that use drugs and look ridiculous. Ron thinks they ARE proposing to use drugs. You be the judge.

Ron played the NC Five from France doing a cover of The Donna’s song “I Don’t Wanna Rock and Roll.” There’s a certain allure to its primitive sound. Ron played the original right after….I have to go with the original on this.

He slipped in a neat guitar heavy pop song “Hey Christine” from Supercrunch from Seattle. Ron compares them to Teenage Fan Club which will give you a good idea how this song comes across.

To hear Ron’s Monday LRC show go to the WMBR archive page hit the LRC show for Monday 9/4.

Skybar Last Tuesday (8/29) Skybar’s Rising had Rick Barton as guest. The minute Rick got on mic he started spilling stories of The Outlets. He says they didn’t know how they sounded because they were drunk. They sounded the best on the sound check, after that they were too drunk.

Rick said he soaked up the local radio, WERS and WMBR. When he heard “Three Chord Rock” he knew he and his brother Dave could get on the radio. They first show at the Rat was with groups Balloon and August. Dave said success came fast.

Rick also talked about the beginnings of Dropkick Murphys. They formed at an AA meeting.

Rick’s next group Everybody Out fell apart when the singer burnt out. That led to stories of the vicissitudes of touring.

Another group he was in was Rick Barton and the Shadowblasters had Billy Loosigian on guitar. They opened for Cheap Trick.

The summary: Rick was a great interview!!

To hear last week’s show – go to the WMFO schedule page Hit the Rising show on 8 to 10 pm on Tuesday, then hit the ‘archive’ button.

PODCASTS........

Geoff Palmer The podcast Punk Till I Die interviewed Geoff Palmer who lives in Madison, WI now. One of his first exposures to punk was from the University of New Hampshire radio station. The hosts and Geoff talk about the local Portsmith, NH punk scene in the early nineties at the Elvis Room club. Geoff played there with Anti Flag and Chixdiggit.

Geoff’s first group was the Useless Fucks in 1996, they had a few singles. Then he had a band called The Guts. Eventually he hooked up with Kurt Baker.

He revealed that The Connection is on hiatus. It seemed like it was easier for him and Brad Marino to do the solo thing for a while.

Geoff is a pop music fanatic and gives some leads to some new pop groups. He also was talking about the Supersuckers doing a song called “The Captain”. It’s about a failed attempt to record with Captain Sensible. It’s on their country album Must’ve Been High. The lyrics are here and the song is on YouTube. Once you know what it’s about, it’s pretty funny!!

Palmer's new album, An Otherwise Negative Situation to be released in October. He'll release a few singles between now and then. It’s ten songs that were done with Zack Spraque and Kurt Baker. They play one new song from the album "FOMO".

They cover a lot of different subjects over the two and a half hour interview.

Here’s your weekly hit of Glam from the Elastic Glam Breakfast Show. Along with the familiar T Rex and David Bowie we took in new songs to us like The Midnight Callers with “New York Tramp,” Glitter Wizard doing “Gliterati,” TAFKAVince with “Magazine Pages” and The Struts doing “Too Good At Raising Hell.”

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

Paper Tigers Jack Graham

Paper Tigers are right on the verge of their new album Charmer. It wil include the previous released singles: “Wedding Cake”, “Charmer” and “Don’t Go Gentle.”

“Into That Good Night” is a typical powerful song by this serious group. They use the Dylan Thomas recognizable phrase “Don’t Go Gentle” and use the word “rage”. If there’s anything this group knows about its raging. The song creates a wall of sound that isn’t monolithic, it has depth and variety. You feel you can get right in there. This group puts so much work into their songs.

We’ll listen to this to hold us over 'til the album drops.

Justin Keane from the duo Canyons and Locusts has taken his minimal sound and gone solo under the name Jack Graham.

The new album Pentecost Flame and Sepulchre is just Justin singing with drums and guitar. Its sparseness and unity of sound are its selling points. The opening cut “Risen Was the Day” is a good introduction. The way it sounds is the way the album sounds, from there you see how he works the minimal elements. It also has some religious overtones that crop up during the work.

It’s not just that it's a solo project but that it also transmits a solitary state. This is one man putting it out there. The album rewards attention.

Our faves are that first song “Risen Was the Day” and then “This Is Our Gospel Song” and “Sepulchre.”

Jay Allen Gretchen Shae

We heard this song on Boston Emissions this week ... we had forgotten about it. Angelle Wood was laughing just announcing it!

It’s Jay Allen and the Archcriminals doing Tom Jones “It’s Not Unusual.” It’s too delicious!! The end, when they get stuck on the “woo woo woo woo” riff, is hilarious! And Skybar played it on his Rising show this week by chance.

The song was on their Decriminalized album from December 2022.

Gretchen Shae and the Middle Eights' new single is “Pretty Little Lies.” It's their first release since the excellent “Skeleton Closet.”

“Pretty Little Lies” seems to be about how people deceive themselves. You can feel Gretchen sing with judgment in her voice. It’s strong and righteous. The band is right in sync with her. They are sharp musicians. The group is slowly building up a quality catalog of songs.

Len Price Trio

OK, now is the time to get excited. The Len Price 3 will be playing in the US in October! Bootleg Dan got them over here.

The dates are… October 12th - Geno’s Rock Bar, Portland ME…October 13 - The Burren, Boston MA…October 14 - Parkside Lounge, NYC.

In preparation for that tour they've released the digital single “The Grass Is Always Greener”/”Man Out Of Time”. “The Grass Is Always Greener” rattles and shakes like an early Who song, you can say Jam if you want, just killer none the less. To think you can catch this live!! Yikes. “Man Out Of Time” calms down a bit to give you a turn to the pop side of things…until, the 1:35 mark, then – what is that?... an insane guitar rave up for 15 seconds.

What great spirit. They have the all the right influences and know how to utilize them.

When your finished with the new single go to the last album Chinese Burn

The Gypsy Moths are such a neat local band! They are so charming and appealing. The mainstream sound, with the elegant writing and playing, goes a long way.

“A Six Man Bicycle,” the opening song to their new album Sounds On clicks on so many levels: the pace, the tone, the writing, the playing. It seems so right, that’s song writing that other’s must be envious of.

We got stuck on “Home To You” after hearing it on a local radio show. The voice on this has a slightly nasal quality that reminds us of the Bodeans. We love the line, “If I could get through this damn day, I’m always in my own damn way”. It has the glow of a sweet memory. A lot of that is accomplished by the assured playing by the whole group. Through the album it’s that cohesive group sound that is the selling point. They are so lucky they found each other. They are like, well, a six man bicycle; “a band together win or lose”, as they sing.

“Tilt-A-Whirl” packed with its Nantasket Beach memories is a song we think only the Gypsy Moths could pull off. For locals this a special song.

We found ourselves enjoying the musicianship and the arrangements of all the songs.

Barrence Whitfield Blue Shadows The Furys

Barrence Whitfield and the Savages' new album Glory (recorded in May) is coming out on FOLC records on October 20, but you can preorder it the Forced Exposure website. They also have clips from all of the songs – tremendous! The group is cranking.

You can even buy it from Walmart for $21.98.

“Blue Shadows” by The Conscious Pilate from Toronto doesn’t seem punk at all. The group however does call up influences like The NY Dolls, Cure and New Order that figure into their indie style.

“Blue Shadows” deals with grown up problems, we like that. The singer admits his faults and tries to make amends. It goes for 5:27 and we still listened to it over and over. It has a mood that can capture you if you let it.

It’s a little far afield of what we usually deal with but worthy we think.

The Furys are a California group that put out some singles starting in 1978. They've collected a variety of them on their 12 cut album New Wave Hit Parade. The songs are pop even more than New Wave. The early singles are very Who influenced. The rest are similar to other pop efforts of the day. If you are a fan of that style you will find a lot to like here.
