Plimsouls at the Middle East
CLICK PHOTO for the BGN report on the show.

The Plimsouls played Boston again a week or so ago. John Keegan was there and does a review with photos.

He write: The Middle East Up slipped in a school night gem of a show this past Wednesday night. Brad Marino Band is a headliner in his own right. The Plimsouls were choice with our own Anthony Kaczynski on lead vocals and snappy rhythm guitar, and the always dapper Garret Vandermolen of Speed Fossil trading his six-string of the low-end four. But the most awesome surprise of the night was the Josie Cotton band! This was Josie’s first Boston show. Hopefully, word of mouth from this fantastic gig will spread and bring her and her excellent, stoked band back to the East Coast soon. Click here to go to review of the show.

Linnea Herzog

Linnea’s Garden got a nice pre-Christmas gift with an article in Worcester Mag.

The article is not a fluff piece, it digs into the themes that Herzog builds her lyrics. It shows again how Linnea’s Garden is a group that reflects the concerns of people growing up and trying to maneuver around today’s societal problems.

Rich Gilbert (Zulus, Human Sexual Response) is moving to Milan, Italy. It wasn’t that long ago that Rich moved from Nashville. Now, he, and his wife and musical partner Eileen Rose, have decided that Italy and Europe are where they can comfortably play their music. Rich is excited and thinks of this as a great adventure. He must have been preparing because he says to us all. “Ciao! Ci rivediamo qualche volta! Andiamo! ”

Nick CaveYou probably got confused several years ago when sculptor Nick Cave started to get a lot of press coverage for his "Soundsuits." We certainly were! But he is not "our" Nick Cave, the musician. But now Nick Cave the musician is a sculptor too or more specifically a ceramicist!

The first showing of musician Nick Cave’s ceramic pieces will be in the Brussels’ Xavier Hufkens museum from April 4 to May 11, 2024.

Cave’s sculptures are a series of 17 figurines depicting scenes in the fictional life of a devil. He envisions the devil as a regular person going through a typical life.

Now, it’s Nick Cave: musician, author and sculptor. Article on the show

The Dead Kennedys' first record Rotting Fruit for Dead Vegetables has just sold 500,000 copies as determined by the Recording Industry Association of America and is now a gold record.

Dead KennedyThe record that came out in 1980 was first on the Dead Kennedys' own label, Alternative Tentacles, and sold out of the back of a car. Those records weren’t even counted only the later records released on Manifesto Records because that had data that could be documented.

Now the band members all hate each other, so there will be no celebrating among them. We always say, you have to wait long enough for things to come around. This time it took 43 years. The story in the SF Chronicle

Bandcamp will continue to do Bandcamp Fridays where most of the money collected goes to the musicians. It happens on the First Friday of the month. The next one is on February 2, 2024.

VIDEOS......

Buff TOm Buffalo Tom song

The new high profile NBC TV show Extended Family is using a Buffalo Tom for its the theme song. To think that a local group has the theme song to a network show is amazing.

But the show is actually Boston based and is inspired by the real life story of Boston Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck, his ex-wife and her boyfriend. Boston comedian Lenny Clark is also a character in the show.

RADIO......

Ron began his Monday Late Risers Club show with a set of covers by The Methadones. That was followed by The Jags (“Back of My Hand”), Scandal (“Goodbye to You”) and The Records (“Starry Eyes”). He played the original “Back of My Hand” and “Starry Eyes” which was generous we thought. Nice set.

He played Cleveland band PAL's cover of “96 Tears.” They change it up a lot, sort of like what the Flying Lizards did to “Money” back in 1979. Even though it’s whipping by fast it has all the organ licks and the song’s essence still comes through.

Another nice find was “Goonies R Good Enough” by Kitty and the Manges from 2006, It’s poppy punk and has a great vocal by Kitty Kowalski of the Kowalskis. It’s on YouTube

The Jackets from Switzerland brought their garage rock to the Middle East back in 2018, the BGN was there. Ron played “Attracted” which the band released this last May.

Angel Face are from Reno, Nevada and their new two songs on Slovenly are garage punk. Nice and dirty stuff. Check that out on Bandcamp

To hear Ron’s Monday LRC show go to the WMBR archive page hit the LRC show for Monday 12/18.

David Greene did the Late Risers Club on Tuesday and he played all songs that came out in 2023. Only a half dozen group names were familiar to us. It was a good way to dive into new material via David’s choices.

To hear David’s Tuesday LRC show go to the WMBR archive page hit the LRC show for Tuesday 12/19.

Skybar had his Top Ten songs of the year on this week’s Rising show. Starting next week the Rising show will be two hours from 8pm to 10pm.

Listen on WMFO 91.5 FM on Tuesday at 8pm and after that go to the WMFO schedule page Hit the Rising show on 8 to 10 pm on Tuesday, then hit the ‘archive’ button.

PODCASTS.........

The Elastic Glam Show continues to go Christmas Crazy!! This week they double down with a Holiday Special Show.

There were Christmas songs from The Linda Linda’s, Darkness, Wizzard, Suzi Quatro and Slade.

Darkness, what other group is so perfect for a Christmas song? And you're really going down the Slade rabbit hole when you have Don Powell & the Occasional Flames singing “It Isn’t Christmas Until Noddy Starts To Sing.”

And then there were the singing Smurfs!

If you like Christmas songs, then local Christmas songs are yet another level up to that. In that case Boston Emissions’ latest show is for you. It’s all Christmas, all local. Anngelle Wood lines up Letters from Cleo, The Other Girls, Today Junior, Waltham and Stripmind.

The new Abbie Barrett song “Christmas Star” sounded super in the lineup and Blue’s “Boston All Stars 12 Dayz” still sounds amazing.

The Kynvet Network is a local publicity business that does a great job getting local bands a higher profile. We are interested in many of those bands on the BGN. Kynvet has posted a Spotify Playlist for the year featuring their bands. It makes for a good year-end review. There's The Chelsea Curve, Paper Tigers, Answerman, The Rupert Selection, Canyons and Locusts, Girl With A Hawk, Looking Glass War, Smitt E. Smitty and the Feztones, Sunshine Riot, Eddie Japan and many more.

Since it’s Christmas we have another radio show with Christmas music that includes some locals. Radio Warfare with Tim Livingston show starts with The Ramones then hits the Peppermint Kicks doing “Peppermint Christmas.” We saw that listed on a few Christmas playlists this year.

They pay Cheap Trick, Slade, John Cale, The Chords (mods), The Yobs (UK The Boys) and others. The Sonics steal “Too Much Monkey Business” and call it “Christmas Time Alone.” The penultimate song is “An Irishman For Christmas” the Kid Gulliver/Jerry Lehane collaboration.

To get the most punk Christmas songs we had to hit Sonic Overload. Al Quint started with Wild Billy Childish doing up The Sonics’ “Santa Claus.”

It gets crazier from then on. Let’s go for some titles here: “Satan Is My Jesus”, “You Set My Christmas Tree on Fire”, “Fuck Christmas”, “I Hate Christmas, “Santa Stole My Baby”, “Christmas in a Bodybag” and, the almost traditional by now, “Merry Christmas, I Fucked Your Snowman” by the Showcase Showdown.

You can hear the whole show on the Sonic Overload web page.

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

DYS reissue Glimmer Stars

Brotherhood, the DYS 1983 album originally on X-Claim records is having a special re-edition on Bridge 9. The label says, “This anniversary pressing compiles both sides of the album as well as the song “Wolfpack” onto a single-sided LP, with a screen-printed B-side. This edition is limited to 1,000 copies available in two colors: clear vinyl (300 pressed) and translucent red vinyl (700 pressed).”

Singer Dave Smalley has serious medical problems. They halted planned 40th Anniversary shows. The proceeds from this special edition will be donated to his medical fund. Pre-order your copy of the DYS Brotherhood LP now. On sale in select stores January 12th, 2024.

Bridge 9 has a store in Beverly, Ma they'll have it there when it comes out. Bridge 9 website

It’s hard to stand out on a compilation with 40 other bands. The Glimmer Stars from Los Angeles did that on Rum Bar’s After School Special album with “Pictures of You.”

Now they have a four song EP out which leads with that neat Britpop gem. The other songs prove that “Pictures of You” is a typical song for them which is to say it’s well written power pop with heavy guitar lines. “Her New World” is a great group workout with plentiful guitar riffage. All four songs are winners.

These songs are from The Rise of The Glimmer Stars' a retrospective compilation that will come out on Rum Bar this winter.

Hollywood Stars SOund City Hollywood Stars Live

A lot of Rum Bar Records harken back to the early seventies. Now, the label has released Sound City by The Hollywood Stars, which was actually recorded in 1976. The group was discovered by Kim Fowley in 1973.

The beginning of “Too Hot to Handle” sounds like the intro to Big Star’s “It the Street.” It’s funny you have to wrap your mind around the recording date. A lot of groups imitate that sound so you are familiar with it, it doesn’t seem too retro. None the less, this is the real deal.

To add to the story, Rum Bar is also releasing a live album from The Hollywood Stars that was recorded in 2019 at the Whiskey a Go Go. They sound great. They still have it completely together.

Dischord has dug up three early outtakes from Minor Threat's In My Eyes album; “In My Eyes”, “Filler” and “Addams Family.” They have the songs on an EP called Out of Step Outtakes. This is a pivotal moment in hardcore. “Addams Family” was used as a coda to “Cashing In.” It's on the Dischord site.

Sonny Vincent (Testors) has a load of good albums out. Now he's are digging up some older stuff and it's on the album Primitives 1969-76, coming out on December 29. It has tracks from some of his early pre-Testors bands like Fury, Distance, Liquid Diamonds, and others.

Right now it’s listed on the Collectors Choice website and it's on Bandcamp.

We like our Christmas music to be punk, hey, we want everything to be punk. Here’s Shandy, an Australian group, who has a punk Christmas song titled “Chistmas Time” and in the middle a seasonal message from Don Powell of Slade. So there you go Merry Christmas!
