The Damned
The Damned return with a classic lineup.

We're remembering some old times ......

The Damned are touring with a '80s line up in the US. That   would be with Captain Sensible, Dave Vanian, Rat Scabies and Paul Gray. That’s   the lineup that played on The Black Album and Strawberries.

They will be hitting Boston at the Big Night Live on May 29. Tickets   To see the dates for the whole tour go to the Official   Damned website It's unfortunate that these new clubs in Boston are so badly   designed and make for a horrible experience. You can check Yelp..or   just talk to anyone that has gone to one of them for a show.

Blowing Smoke with Twisted RicoWe're so humble that it hurts to do this but we must self-promote! We (Miss Lyn and Blowfish) are going to be on Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico podcast this week.
Steev Riccardo says he will post the interview on Monday 3/4. Steev kept the focus mostly on the early days, and by early days we mean 1974 to 1980. Those were exciting and life changing years for us.
We found a home in punk and never looked back. Punk formed around us and the landscape of rock shifted. The mainstream rejected us and we made our own scene and system. We talk about how that happened in Boston. You can find the show on the Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico podcast page.

Proletariat We just found this 40 minute live set by The Proletariat in 1981 on WERS. This band ages so well!! They are angry yes, but focused. Each song zeroes in on a social/political problem. It’s amazing how together they had it back then. That’s the way they are now too. Their 2019 album Move is a powerful statement.

Here is the Move  album on Bandcamp, and Soma Holiday is in there too.

Going back further to 1979 here’s three songs by Baby’s   Arm ( the precursor to Classic Ruins) recorded at Cantone’s.   Ah, Cantone’s, that was our home! The songs are “Nyquil Stinger”,   “Heart Attack” and “I’m a Wimp”. Classic Boston   punk. Check it   out on YouTube

Leesta Vall Evil FelipeEvil Felipe will be traveling to Brooklyn in August to record  at Leesta Vall Recording studios. Leesta Vall does direct to vinyl recordings.  That means the band plays the song and it will cut a vinyl record at that time. One performance equals one record.

Linnea’s Garden and Actor/Observer   both did this in 2021. You can buy a record for $30.00 and you get to pick from twelve songs. Sign up on the Leesta   Vall website

Record Store Day is coming on April 20. Here’s a list   of special releases that can be bought that day.

VIDEOS......

On the NYHC Chronicles Drew Stone salutes the 50 year anniversary of the beginning of CBGB’s. He has on Dana Kristal the son on Hilly Kristal. You think that would be full of inside stories. In a way it is but it’s not that simple. It was hard to get a straight memory out of Dana without the family baggage in tow. Dana feels that his mother got slighted in the CBGB’s story, and it sounds like she did, but he dwells on it incessantly. There’s no moving forward without stopping to bring his mother into the story. In another way he’s a New York City character, so there’s that side.

Drew does his best to get some straight info from Dana and prompts him with photos of the club but it mostly goes down in flames. Drew knows all this but soldiers on.

We found ourselves going back time and again to Happy Little Clouds' new release “The Emperor’s Song.” It is a catchy tune that bounces along and throws in a positive message with the “listen to your heart” lyric. The organ playing adds to the magic.

Now, there is a video of the song. The upbeat tone is reinforced with the band having fun with their emperor costumes. The rich colors make it all click.

RADIO......

Last Tuesday, 2/27, Skybar interviewed Rick Barton on his Rising show on WMFO 91.5 FM.

Skybar’s last interview with Rick was full of stories about The Outlets and the Dropkick Murphys early days. This time he kept the focus on the two albums (Nowhere Man and Comin’  Home) Rick has released simultaneously on Rum Bar. Rick says it was Skybar   mentioning Rick's new material to Lou Mansdorf (of Rum Bar)l that made Lou inquire   about that and eventually release the material on Rum Bar.

Rick also let out that him and his brother Dave will be onstage with the Dropkick Murphys in a show down south to play a few Outlets songs.

This Tuesday 3/5 Skybar will have Leesa Coyne of  Lonley Leesa & the Lost Cowboys to talk about the video for the powerful “Stayed” song. She will play a few live songs in the studio also.

Tune in Tuesday at 8pm on WMFO at 91.5FM. After that go to the WMFO   schedule page Hit the Rising show on 8 to 10 pm on Tuesday, then hit the ‘archive’ button.

Crash Course for the Ravers (WMFO Saturday 1pm) started with   a few Lou Reed songs to celebrate his birthday.

Then Brian Young had an interview with The Cynz. They are an example of a band from out of town (New Jersey, NYC) that have groomed an audience in Boston by playing here regularly and connecting with local DJs, and in this case, a promoter; Bootleg Dan. Cyndi Dawson and Henry Seiz talk about songwriting, influences and touring. They are playing   in LA at the Viper Room this week.

Hear the interview below. To hear the whole show go to the WMFO schedule page Hit the Rising show on 1 pm on Saturday, then hit the ‘archive’ button.

On Joanie’s Late Risers show she played Loco  Hombre. They're a Boston group but sing in Spanish. We didn’t know about them before, but are intrigued now!

Joanie played "La Vita" which we have streaming below. They have nine songs on their Bandcamp page.

Travel maven, Joanie is going to Sweden this week so she played a lot of groups from there in the show.

To hear Joanie’s show go to the WMBR archive page and hit the Late Risers Show for Monday 2/26.

PODCASTS.........

Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico had Andrea Gillis in talking about her long career. As Steev says Andrea is one of the most respected musicians on the scene. Her raw singing talent would get her attention in any situation. Andrea went from Roxbury to Southie growing up, she has a very Boston story.

Steev then leads her into telling the whole Abbey Lounge story. There was no music in the Abbey when the local band Schnockered asked to play. It took off from there.

Andrea didn’t start singing until a year before the Abbey started up. Steev gets her to talk about all her solo albums in turn. One of Andrea’s  most memorable gigs was being the first band to play the House of Blues in Boston opening with J Geils.

Andrea divulged she has plans for an EP this year in May with “Leave the Light On”, “About a Girl”, “Jump Into the Fire”,   “I Don’t Need You No More” and a new song.

Rick Barton was also on the debut of a new podcast called   The Hardcore Record this week.

Rick reveals he will be putting out a third album this year. He talks about how Kiss had three albums in 18 months when they began and that was a model for his two albums. Rick always has new stories and strong opinions.

The Elastic Glam Breakfast show began (after the T.Rex opener) with a series of five glam tunes that flowed like water. It was eminently listenable. It ended with the smooth “The Sweet Life” by Tell. When Sethyspice reached back he picked David Essex, Marmalade and Slade.

We were introduced to Killerstar a group of former Bowie collaborators.   Sethyspice got right on Marc Valentine’s new song “Tyrannical Wrecks”….we love that play on T. Rex. Marc will be at the Music Room in Yarmouth on March 21. (more info in the gig listings below).

There’s plenty of other fine material. Elastic Glam is a solid part of our week now.

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

Hammered Saint Barrance Whitfield

Holy crap, this Hammered Saint recording comes blaring out of the speakers and blows you over!! They are getting louder and punker. The new song “Taylor Swift” is a mere 1:35 but they pack a shit load into that. Emily Doran has one of the great punk voices here or anywhere. She sings all out, all the time. Curt Florczak does some dirty dancing on the frets around the 38 second mark and then some angular riffage at the 1:20 mark - cool. The rhythm section is pumping the whole way.

We have it on our Top Ten Songs

Barrence Whitfield steals the show on Sal Baglio's Amplifier Heads' release “They Came To Rock.”

This is from a live rock opera that played in Nashville a few years ago. Aliens come to earth to find out who are these people making this ‘rock music’?

The song is stamped with that Barrence vocal that is hard to deny and BTW Barrence is coming to Boston and Portland this month - check the gig listings below

Bob Moss Skin tight Skin Coffin Pricks

Rob Moss and Skin Tight Skin are up to their fifth single in the work up to a new album. We’ve heard some stellar guest spots in these tunes. “You and Time” some fantastic guitar by 1960s garage rock legend Randy Klawon of The Choir, Cyrus Erie, The Quick and The Half-Cubes. The guitar lines absolutely soar. Randy has a searing tone and complete control. The whole thing seems to go beyond music to be painterly or architectural. What a piece of work.

Semi-Perfect Crimes by Coffin Pricks from Chicago is a decade old recording rescued by Council Recording. Coffin Pricks were punks with a non-typical sound. They didn’t thud power chords but slashed sharp chords in a jagged rhythm.

We like the treble guitar work in “Glass Splinter”. All the ‘Saki Sessions’ revel a sharp post punk sound. They were dynamite live.

There’s a lot to get into here, they are a find. We’re going to leave you with “Brilliant Boris” because that shows the mechanistic/syncopated rhythm that is typical of them to good effect.

Stop Calling Me Frank Still Animals album THe Kilograms Ska band

Stop Calling Me Frank have had a “Spider in My Beer” and did their “Drinking After Work”. Now they take on “Whiskey   in the Jar” an old traditional Irish ballad as their latest release. Thin Lizzy had a hit with it in 1972. SCMF only needed till the sax comes in to make   this song their own. That sax line by Terry O’Malley, which takes from Thin Lizzy, but modifies it, is so warm and alive that it stamps the song immediately. The group as a whole is made for material like this.

Rum Bar has taken the song and included it on a seven cut EP Whiskey in the Jar and Other Tales From the Bar. It’s got Rum Bar bands Shaggahs, Rick Barton, The Gypsy Moths, Richie Parsons, Matweeds and Jittery Jack.

We spotlighted the song “Look Kool” by Still Animals (St. Louis, MO) a few weeks ago. Now the whole self-titled album has been released on Bandcamp.

They don’t wander from their raw garage sound at all. That might seem like a recipe for dullness but to us it makes a great no bullshit garage album. They are too busy making a glorious messy sound to bother with any finesse.

Now that The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are kaput where do you go to get your ska? Here’s one Boston ska band to check out, The Kilograms. They don’t have horns. They keep things low and tidy with a warm organ sound as a supporting bed. They have a very authentic sound. It’s subtlety over bombast with The Kilograms.
