BOOKS......

We are seeing more and more people coming forth with their punk backgrounds as time goes on. We now know that Nancy Barile became a teacher when it came out in her book I’m Not Holding Your Coat.

Combat LoveNow CCN anchor Alisyn Camerota talks about her time at CBGB’s, Max’s Kansas City and on the punk scene in her biography Combat Love: A Story of Leaving, Longing and Searching for Home. Her main group fixation was Shrapnel, and they had a song called “Combat Love”. Shrapnel came from Red Bank, New Jersey and Alisyn did too

Alisyn attributes her time in punk to toughing her up so that she could face rough criminals later in interviews without flinching.

Something we didn’t know about Shrapnel (who we saw at the Underground in the early 80s) was this from their Wikipedia page: "In 1980, Amazing Spider-Man Annual #14 featured a plot in which Peter Parker goes to see Shrapnel play at CBGB. A super-villain mind-controls the crowd and band, forcing Spider-Man and Doctor Strange to save the day. The comic also contained an ad for Shrapnel's "Combat Love" b/w "Hey" 45.

You can see a video interview with Camerota here A deeper dive here and ... Get the book on Bookshop.org

Generation BlankIt's kind of like a book and it's a 5CD set bringing a comprehensive look at the early years of punk rock in the US and Canada with over six hours of music. It's Blank Generation - A Stary of US/Canadian Punk & Its Aftershocks 1975-1981.

It includes benchmark tracks by the scene’s most influential bands plus many rare singles making their first appearance on CD. besides bands you wuold expect like Patti Smith Group, The Ramones, Television, Blondie, The Voidoids, – as well as the scene’s other pioneers such as Pere Ubu and The Dead Boys, Dead Kennedys and Crime, Devo, The Germs and The Weirdos. There are Boston bands Mission of Burma, DMZ, Lyres, The Modern Lovers, The Girls, The Bags, Minor Threat. And other bands like The Gizmos (the original Ken Highland version), Wall of Voodoo, The Slickee Boys, The Mumps, Destroy All Monsters, The Suicide Commandos.

it is well worth the $39.98 from Cleopatra Records.

VIDEOS......

Come have been releasing their old albums one by one. The next one is their debut ElevenEleven. It will come out on April 20th on Fire Records. The Exit Musik website did a video interview with the band.

The band has some great stories. After they talk about how they got together they mention how Chris Brokaw and Thalia Zedek ended up with their autographs on the cover of Sonic Youth’s Washing Machine record. They talk about doing the John Peel sessions, touring with acts like Pavement, Sugar, Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth and most famously Nirvana. They said the Nirvana audiences were excited to be at the show and cheered Come on. There was no dissing of the opening act on that tour. Chris said it was tense at those Nirvana shows with the situation with Kurt and Courtney Love.

The interview is 25 minutes long with a few songs included from a recent concert. Come have some of their reissues on their Bandcamp page Near Life Experience, by Come

RADIO......

SpaklesOn Tuesday (4/9) Skybar will have the members of The Spackles in for an interview and to play some songs live in the studio on his Rising show. They are getting lots of attention for their latest single “The Dotted Line”

Tune in Tuesday at 8pm on WMFO at 91.5FM. After that go to the WMFO schedule page Hit the Rising show on 8 to 10 pm on Tuesday, then hit the ‘archive’ button.

It was Pixies' Frank Black's birthday on Saturday. Brian Young played nine cuts from Frank Black/Pixies/The Breeders. It included an interview and some live cuts. Go to the WMFO schedule page Hit the Crash Course for the Ravers show on 1 to 3pm on Saturday, then hit the ‘archive’ button.

On Sonic Overload this week, Al Quint played “Home” a demo by Busted Statues. It’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything by this late 80s band. Bob L’Heureux was a memorable singer. Here’s a band history on the WBUR website from a few years ago

Then in the same set was “Action Man” by local group The Not. Another song that we haven’t heard in ages.

Quint played some Adam and the Ants, “Press Darlings” with Adam playing in town this last week. He followed it up with Lene Lovich’s “New Toy”.

And we didn’t know that Anal Cunt had a song titled “Everyone In Allston Should Be Killed.” You can’t find that song everywhere.

You can hear the show at SONIC OVERLOAD

PODCASTS.........

It’s your weekly blast of glam with the Elastic Glam Breakfast Show!! Sethyspice features some songs that were produced by Toni Visconti and one by the man himself “Clorissa.”

Sethyspice also played “Kiss Kiss” by Gyasi, a new glam band from Nashville .

Then there was the special guest, the Lincoln Street Elementary School (Northborough, MA) 5th Grade Choir singing Bowie’s “Let’s Dance”. Gee, we never got to sing anything more zingy than “Sunrise Sunset” from Fiddler on the Roof at our school.

There’s lots of new glam to catch up on by Starbender, Automatic Shoes, Starcrazy, Billy Tibbals with Thin Lizzy and Velvet Underground in there for good measure.

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

“Get Off My Lawn” - that phrase is a shortcut for the enraged homeowner. Hammered Saint takes all that overheated emotional turmoil and stokes it for all it is worth the in their song of the same name. They have the secret weapon of Emily Doran's voice but we also love the background voices in the chorus which are just the band yelling “get off my lawn”. The song rides on Andy Excuse's busy low, bumping bass. We’re loving it!! We have it on our Top Ten Songs.

After School Special: Pop Punk Revolution Reunion is the latest from Rum Bar. It's a 5 song EP of songs from some upcoming albums.

Right off we see J Prozac so that interests us. Looks like his album, Obsession, is coming out soon. Some self-examination drives the lyrics in “Problems.” Jay now thinks the problem could be himself, that drives this swift pop punk tune. Jay has a way to deliver his lyrics that make them instantly memorable and appealing.

The Cretins are in similar territory with “ I Wanna Be Your Boy”. Their album will be called (love this) We’re Gonna Get So Old.

Pavid Vermin’s “Desecrate the Cathedral” is a different beast all around. We like that it's poppy and ornate but it’s hard to pin it down. We’re going to have to hear the album to figure out the ins and outs of this.

Then there is a Wimp! song “Yesterday” and a Glimmer Twins song “Sugar Blue” both of which are on their last albums... and both of those albums are some of our fave Rum Bar releases!

The Mad Ones are from Toronto. Everyone uses the adjective ‘raw’ to describe their sound and we do too. Their guitars, for one, are just so damn down and dirty, it’s wonderful. Their songs are a combination on garage, punk and pop.

What It Takes is their fifth album. We plan on working our way through some of those releases. Some of our faves on this album are “What It Takes”, “Molly Math”, “Drone” and “Mess”. Ironically “Mess” starts soft and delicate which is such a switch for them, but it doesn’t last. At the minute and a half mark it gets messier than usual even.

We’re going to leave you with “Last Summer” which is a good showcase for what they do. For the rest of the album go to their Bandcamp page

Here’s another Canadian group, this time from Montreal; The Hood Rats are punk. They've been around since 2017 but Crime, Hysteria & Useless Information is their first album. It's 14 cuts of punk. Hey, that’s all we ask for!

Most songs are around two minutes long. The titles show the usual subjects: “Fuck the Police”, “Gimme The Creeps”, “Let’s Break the Law”, “Join a Cult” and “Hate the Radio”, Maybe “We Can Be Zeros” is an answer song to the Bowie song.

We give you a song whose lyric idea is a punk perennial – “I Wanna Be Sick”. The album on Bandcamp

Beebe Gallini have a digital single out now and it’s nice to hear this Rum Bar group from the Twin Cities back in action. The “She Hulk” is a cover of “Nobody Loves the Hulk” from The Traits in 1969. Miss Georgia Peach is sort of a vocal She Hulk. She has ultra-mega vocal cords that make every song special.

Beebe Gallini have recorded this before. This new version is part of She Rock, She Rock! The Woman’s Rock in Roll Retreat in The Twin Cities. We love the opportunity to play it again.

We’ve been following Rob Moss and the Skin-Tight Skin for a while now as they release a single a month till the release of an album. The latest single is “Ink Blue Smoke Again”. They have had interesting guests on every single. This time it’s Robbi Robb who was in South Africa’s first punk band in 1980. Robbi does excellent rhythm and lead work in the song. The repetition in the chorus works because of Robbi’s choppy and tight rhythm playing.

Another group giving us a steady run of singles is Dream of a Man in a Top Hat. Their latest is “Wolfcrier”. Like their other recordings this sounds like a 80s art rock song. It bounces along and has a neat guitar line. It’s so well done it seems like a professional recording job. They are on a good streak here.

Sal Baglio is writing songs like crazy these days. They Came to Rock is a soundtrack to a stage show. The album is done under The Amplifier Heads umbrella but has lots of guest like: Barrence Whitfield, Sal Baglio, Jen D’Angora, Dan Kopko, Allen Estes and Samantha Goddess.

A lot is done in 1950s and 60s rock styles. The fifties were the golden age of spaceship sightings for some reason. Some songs are more modern like: "Bienvenue", "Dead Star", "The Best It's Gonna Be".

“That Girl Betty” starts with a transmogrified “When She Walks In The Room” and then Jen D’Angora takes the song to sixties girl group sounding heaven.

The album ends with “The Moon Rocks” done up in Sun Records era Elvis style. It’s really a showcase for Sal who seems to take on all songwriting challenges.

One of punk’s defining characteristics was its hate of ‘classic’ rock and the Grateful Dead and prog music specifically. John Lydon famously had “I hate Pink Floyd” shirt. Now what do we get? Punk groups covering Pink Floyd under the name Punk Floyd. Picture us shaking our heads.....The album in on the Cleopatra Records label.

The punk groups on the album are: The Vibrators, UK Subs, Dead Boys, Skids, Anti-Nowhere League, The Members, JFA, Eater, Jah Wobble, Fear, Dead Boys, Peter and the Test Tube Babies, The Queers, D.I., MDC, Angry Samoans, Chrome and Knox.

One song is released now: Fear doing “Astronomy Domine”.

In the promotions for this album they mention the friction between punk and prog. We wonder, since it’s now over 45 years ago, how many people even know about that?

The album will be released on May 3. Pre order here

We talked about The Lolas from Alabama last November and their song “Shut Me Down” that just so delightfully pop that we found it irresistible. The group has been together since 1998.

They just released another digital single that's right up the same alley. Even with the unlikely title “Work is the Blackmail of Survival” it’s still is a light pop tune with a 12 string solo in the middle. It’s a short 1:48. Wow.
