Dogmatics new song
New song by the Dogmatics

Spotigy logoAnd it just gets worser and worser!! ... Bandcamp is bought out and policies could change, now Spotify may not pay musicians whose songs don’t get enough streams to make it worth paying them. Spotify is orienting itself to the big music acts that will make them money.

Streaming media is turning out to be the digitally efficient way to screw the small musician even easier. Read more of the horrible details on the Metal Injection web site

While you can, take advantage of this Friday, 11/3, being Bandcamp Friday. Get your music and support your favorite musicians directly. We should be doing this as long as Bandcamp is doing it. More info

WMBR is doing their yearly fund raiser. We always chip in for the Late Risers Club. More than ever it seems like time to support what you like or see it disappear. The fund raising goes from Wednesday November 1 to Tuesday November 7.

They are taking pledges online and they will have some enticing gifts with your donation too.

Tamora GoodingA GoFundMe page has been set up for Tamora Gooding the drummer for Gene Dante & the Future Starlets, Magen Tracy & the Missed Connections and Axemunkee who had some emergency surgery this week and is unable to work during her long recovery.

Here is the GoFundMe page

Light of Day Records has moved from Bone Up Brewery in Everett to Deep Cuts in Medford Square . They're having a party at noon on Saturday, November 4 to celebrate. You can scour the record bins and have a sandwich…which look great…and beer/ale.

VIDEOS......

Green Day have a new song and vid. “The American Dream is Killing Me” manages to do a few things at once. First of the song is a good one. It has some nice melodic hooks in there. It hits hard in the Green Day style. It makes a political point which Green Day has done before. Finally by using the metaphor of the living dead it lines up with the Halloween season to boot. The last shot is a bit shocking.

Their fourteenth album Saviors will be out January 19. We know there are some Green Day haters out there but they have proven to be a hard working band and have kept up their creative spirits all this time.

RADIO......

Tim Kelly did his once a month DJ stint on the Late Risers Club on Tuesday. He prerecords his show from his home in Chicago.

He played “Fits” by Wimps, a punk group from Seattle. It’s short blast. The album is thirteen cuts that average two minutes long. They focus on simple and humorous life observations. It’s a worthy punk find.

To hear Tim’s Tuesday LRC show go to the WMBR archive page hit the LRC show for Tuesday 10/24.

PODCASTS.........

Steeve Ricardo on Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico had Jay Allen in for an interview. The object was to get the Quest for Tuna story down.

Jay comes from Trenton, NJ and came to Boston to go to BU and had Evan Shore of Muck and the Mires as a roommate. It didn’t take long for them both to end up at the Rat and Metro to see the punk bands. Quest’s first tape was recorded at Fort Apache.

After Quest for Tuna Jay found himself living in the Malachite band house. Jay and four women – that’s a sitcom. He later ended up doing solo shows at the Abbey Lounge. Then he started Jay Allen and the Archcriminals and hooked up with Rum Bar Records.

With 40 years of friendship Jay had a lot to say about Justine Covault.

Jay has lots of stories. You would need a few more hours to get the all the details of his escapades.

This week on the Electric Glam show they start with TRex doing “You Scare Me To Death” which lines up with the Halloween theme.

Where else are you going to hear Thunderthighs doing “Dracula’s Daughter”? There was a great throwback from 1973, it was Blackfoot Sue with “Glittery Obituary”.

The Rat Tales podcast has gone into its archives and posted some older interviews. Back in 2013 they interviewed Rayboy Fernandes and Billy Connors of Cadillac Heart.

The Rayboy interview is well timed because he was just inducted into the New England Music Hall of Fame with the Atlantics. Ray has a lot of Atlantic stories. He remembers it all.

Billy Connors has such a long history. He goes back to the very beginnings of the scene with The Boize and they had one of the first singles to come out of the Boston scene.

Both interviews have some live footage of a Richard Nolan show at the old Magic Room (Connors was in the group) and some songs by Cadillac Heart.

NEW MUSIC/CDs....

The years seem to just melt away when you hear the new Dogmatics song “I Can’t Get Over You”. The song is mid-80’s Dogmatics ...the sound, the song style, the sound of the voices and the feel of the lyrics. It has two of the attributes we love the most with punk songs – it’s catchy and short. At 1:52 you can listen to it over and over – you know we did. Like Jerry Lehane said...keep it short and keep 'em wanting more. and you will!!... like we did!

The emotion in “I Can’t Get Over You” makes you think about young love but in the lyrics they say, “I’ll do the dishes/I’ll fold the cloths/ I’ll make you tea in the morning/and butter your toast” and that’s what a long time spouse would do. This speaks to us as older adults even as we bounce along like young punks to the tune.

It song was recorded by Ed Riemer at Ed’s Barn in Canton.

Catch the lyric video here

The Dogumentary is still playing festivals. The Dogmatics will be at the LA Punk Film Festival for the showing of the film on December 3. That’s exciting. A new full album will be following this single. What a year this group is having, a mere 40 years after their initial run.

New Frustrations new is on Bandcamp. Lifetime is six songs that are so good that they will not be ignored…will they? Already this group has a string of releases that should have given them a higher profile. This does seem like a game changer. The songs are killer and it’s a revved up Woolly Mammoth recording job.

This is pop with punk power!! ... or just call it power pop. The Minehan involvement is suitable because they recall the Neighborhoods in places like “I Can’t Be”.

Any one of these song would make a notable single release. The group has got the recording that should get them attention. Now, we hope that others jump on the bandwagon with this.

It’s obvious that One Fall have come to conquer. They won the Rumble having been together for less than a year, and they release this ferocious five song EP Spine First.

One FallWhen you start the first song “Rage/Quit” you almost can feel the sound blast pushing you back. You need a second to catch your breath. What a group this is!! They are super tight and loud. Then that drumming by Caleb Wheeler is seismic. Where did he come from?

The second song “Surrounder” reveals another quality the group has, those melodic segments that stand out. Here it comes in the chorus section: “Everything begins and ends/But I will hold this ground and wait for you/And I will break before I bend”

As the group rages below, Helen McWilliams sings above, with a voice that's clear and strong - and she owns the moment. It happens because of the quality of the voice, the melody and the way she phrases. It sounds like it is double tracked which adds even more of a hit. It has even more meaning because the way this group presents itself you can believe the words she sings are the band’s motto.

They do the same thing in “Raleigh” with the band thrashing and the voice capturing the spirit of the lyrics. With this going for them how could they not win the Rumble? This is killer music.

“Back to the Wall” is hardcore hard and unrelenting.

The “Born to Run” is a fun cover but it’s the originals that are essential here.

We have “Surrounder” on our Top Ten Songs

Shiverlane’s new single “I Get Nervous” checks off a lot of boxes for us. The best thing is that the band has a natural raw garage/punk sound. We get flashbacks to the early punk days before punk got boxed in and codified. We heard lots of bands like this, bands that were garage bands that added some pop, punk energy and attitude.

We love that distinctive vocal and the stuttering delivery. The guitar has a raw tone too. We like the recording job done at Mooncusser in Upton, MA.

This was going to be on Red on Red Records but Justine Covault's untimely and shocking passing changed that.

We have it on our Top Ten Songs

The band will play with Nat Freedberg’s Freeloader at Notch Brewing Brighton on Thursday 12/28. That’s a free show.

Boston loves its garage bands. Tom “Satch” Kerans influences even go farther back than Shiverlane. Tom name checks the Kingsmen, the Sonics and the Knickerbockers. We get those early/mid-sixties vibes for sure, especially the Knickerbockers. That was the music we grew up with and we can almost hear this coming out of the transistor in 1964.

We don’t think it’s easy to nail a song like this now. It’s a whole ballgame to get a song lined up and recorded and to sound authentic, most especially. Kerans does it all.

On the recording is Brad Hallen of the Nervous Eaters (this guy is everywhere) and George Hall on guitar.

We have it on our Top Ten Songs

Cindy Lawson’s cover to her new release Don’t Come Crying To Me (on Rum Bar Records) had a familiar look to it. It’s a mockup of Suzi Quatro’s first album. Blowfish got that signed by Quatro in Harvard Sq. in 1973!

Cindy’s influences go back even further than that to the early sixties. It’s not a deep a dive as the Lyres but who could do that? Still there’s a sass and a forceful personality in the songs that isn’t in the innocent pop radio fodder of those times.

Even though the titles seem negative (“I Don’t Want You Anymore”, “Don’t Come Crying To Me”, “Go Find Another Heart To Break”) the songs go along at a brisk pace and with harmonica and sax fills there’s no time to mope. Cindy’s voice has a real presence and marks her material.

The songwriting is so good that you don’t even think about it, but after you hear the EP you realize you got all these 60’s vibes and enjoyed it all and it’s all original songs.

Just the title tune is up on Bandcamp now.
