Dead BOys
Jake Hout and Cheetah Chrome - Dead Boys Alchemy Prov.RI.
Photo: Captain Easychord

It was a big disappointment when the Dead Boys cancelled their Middle East show. Cheetah Chrome was down and out with the flu. They did play two days later down in Providence. Captain Easychord was down there, he actually played in Glider that night as he took notes and photos. We have his report.

The night started with 2023 Rumble winners One Fall, then it was Provy locals Midnight Creeps with attention getter Jennie Hurricane. Then it was Glider, who covered La Peste’s “Stuck on the Same Refrain”, and finally Dead Boys. Cheetah still was battling the flu and the set ended early but the crowd was slam dancing like crazy while it lasted.

Dead Boys Show

The New England Music Hall of Fame night at the Regent Theater was last week and Captain Easychord was there too. . A lot of musical acts received their recognition that night. Captain talks about The Atlantics, Mach Bell, a moving tribute to Justine Covault, The Bentmen, Girl With a Hawk. Angela Gillis, Rick Berlin and more.

Music Awards show

Ducky CarlisleDucky Carlisle died this week. He was a very well know local (Medford) producer. He won three Grammy awards! He did a lot of pop with Bleu, Corin Ashley, Figgs, Andrea Gillis and more. He won his Grammys for his blues efforts including a Buddy Guy record.

He was also a drummer and played with 1.4.5. in later years (photo to right). We saw him play with the group in the 2013 International Pop Overthrow at Precinct. We also saw him play with Asa Brebner in 2014

To get an idea of his output you can go to Discogs and see his listing of 175 albums!! Article about Ducky in Vanyaland

The Jacklights and Double Star are having a double EP release show at the Square Root on October 20. Jake Tringali will also be reading some of his edgy punk poetry. Jake was featured in some of the Thrash n’ Bang Christmas shows and we featured him a few times. Here’s one . He adds a lot to the night. Here's the Facebook event page for the show.

VIDEOS......

Video song

Greg Kuehn was a member of T.S.O.L. After that he's been involved with many groups (Dylan, The Church, Berlin), films (Repo Man) and TV shows. He plays with X occasionally. This video of his song “Medicine Man” is a long way from punk but is very moving. It is about dealing with mental illness which Greg has dealt with. It gets surrealistic at the 3:18 mark. We will not give it away here, you should be surprised when you see it.

RADIO......

SkybarSkybar had Cold Expectations in for an interview and some live songs. They played “In the Padlock Night” and dedicated it to Justine Covault.

They have a new single which is a cover of Lou Miami’s “I Live With Ghosts. We talk about that in the new music section below. In the interview they give a lot of credit to David Minehan at Woolly Mammoth for arranging the time to record and to add so much to the track in production.

The Cold Expectation next show is at the Jungle on Saturday10/14 and then the International Pop Overthrow. (see the gig listings below)

To hear the show go to the WMFO schedule page. Hit the Rising show on Tuesday at 8pm and then hit the ‘archive’ link.

This coming week 10/10 Skybar will have The Jacklights in. They will talk about thier new excellent EP Final Girl. We have a review below.

Muck and the MiresBrian Young had Muck and the Mires on his WMFO A Crash Course for the Ravers show. Muck and the Mires have had a busy year. They went to Austin for SXSW, they played in Seattle twice and established a fan base there. In Europe they played England and Spain in festivals to large crowds. They just came back from Mexico where they played with the Gruesomes (They played a few songs from them). What they haven’t done is play Boston in six months!

They've got a new record coming out in early 2024 called Beat Revolution on Dirty Water Records in London. They played a few of those new songs in the studio.

To hear the show go to the WMFO schedule page. Hit the A Crash Course for the Ravers show on Saturday at 1pm and then hit the ‘archive’ link.

Anngelle Wood goes over the Boston Music Awards nominees on the latest Boston Emissions show.

There are a good choices in there: Miracle Blood, Sapling and One Fall. We were glad to be reminded of Astral Bitch who are up for New Artist of the Year. They are indie/post punk. Their “You’ve Got It Wrong” single came out in March this year. Here it is on Bandcamp

Kurt Baker is getting into the radio bizz…or buzz. His show, The Buzz Electric, is on the Underground Garage station on Sirius Radio!! It’s on Saturday mornings…early from 4 to 8am. Kurt has a wide range of music that he draws from and some are surprising and always interesting. He’s not a one trick pony.

On Joanie’s Thursday Late Risers Club she played a local group we hadn’t heard before: Cigarette Camp has a six song EP. The songs go from 25 seconds all the way up to 1:24. They have a raw punk sound but with some relatively clear guitar sounds mixed in.

Joanie played “Living With Employment” which actually has an organ part in it. We really liked “So Long” in which the singing of ‘so long’ takes up the majority of its 36 seconds. The whole EP is a fulfilling rush of punk. This is a good find and it would be nice to see this group live.

To hear Joanie’s Thursday LRC show go to the WMBR archive page hit the LRC show for Thursday 10/5.

On Ron’s Monday Late Risers Club show he had an Austin group called Pussy Gillette doing “Permanent Trash.” It has an automatic feel to its punk progression that sounds a bit VU to boot. The lyrics have some humor and sass that adds to its appeal.

If you go to their Bandcamp page you can see the video for the song to get the full impact

To hear Ron’s Monday LRC show go to the WMBR archive page hit the LRC show for Monday 10/2.

PODCASTS.........

This week on Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico he had Kurt Davis the lead singer from Bullet LaVolta and the Konks.

Kurt had a career in Indiana before doing Bullet LaVolta. He was involved with the Zero Boys. Like a lot of people he liked rock music but it wasn’t till punk began that he knew he could play in a band. He played drums. Bullet LaVolta is the first band he sang for. He gives his side of the Bullet LaVolta story.

He worked at Mystery Train records with Peter Prescott and was in the band Customized with him for a while and has lots of good things to say about him.

There is a new podcast called The Eradicators that currently has an episode on punk rock American Sign Language interpreter Justin Maurer. In June 2022 we spotlighted Amber Galloway Gallego who does signing for Heavy Metal groups.

Justin's mother was deaf so he learned the language growing up. He has a story that was new to us on a San Francisco punk club called The Deaf Club. Groups that played there were: DOA, Dills, The Germs, X, Avengers and The Nuns. Originally it was a club for the deaf where they could get information and communicate with each other. They rented out their hall to get money and punk bands took advantage of it. The deaf people ran the bar, the punks did the music. The club ran one year from 1978-79 and was closed for noise complaints – the irony!! There is a documentary Live at the Deaf Club being made about it.

We have glam in our lives every week with the Elastic Glam Breakfast podcast. There’s so much good stuff this week.

After the T Rex opener the first song is “Let’s Go Steady” by Howlin’ Sun. The sound is a mix up of Led Zeppelin and garage. It’s so unexpected. Here it is below.

Then it’s a whole bunch of new to us songs we love: Vera Bloom – “Eyes On You”, Warwick – “Let’s Get the Party Going”, Roger Joseph Manning Jr – “Rockin’ It Our Way”, Royal Sugar – “Heels” and the Washington Flyers with “Another Saturday Morning”.

There’s a cover of Lou Reed’s “Candy” by the Mutual Admiration Society and a cover of “Painted Love” by Broken Peach.

NEW MUSIC/CDs.....

Sister in Crime song Cold Expectations album cover

Getting over the loss of Justine doesn’t get any easier. There are always reminders because she was involved in so much of what we care about. This sweet Justine tribute song “Sister in Crime” by Jay Allen is another reminder. Listening to it we go through a series of emotions. In the end we sort of get in a mindful reverie. The song that gets to the six minute mark doesn’t get mawkish. It works because it rocks on its way to telling its story. Jay is the man to do this too. Justine was truly his “sister in crime”. It’s also suitable to have Charles Hanson’s guitar work priming the song. Justine really appreciated Charles’ talent.

We have it on our Top Ten Songs

We knew this was coming. It’s Cold Expectations version of Lou Miami’s “I Live With Ghosts”. It’s close to the original. The guitar duties are done by everyone’s first choice these days – James Melanson and he does a fine job. He nails the all the parts and adds his own solo. The group captures the lilt and stylings that give the song its flavor.

Part of Cold Expectations success is their taste. They know what to play, what to add and in this case what to cover. This is right in time for Halloween to add to its appeal. Lou Miami never goes out of style. It’s gratifying for us that experienced him back in the day to see him being appreciated now.

They'll have a video of the song by Joan Hathaway soon.

Kurt Baker album Final Girl by Jacklights

For anyone else it would be a career high, for Kurt Baker, his new album Rock N’ Roll Club is one of many. He puts out these amazing pop collections time after time.

We’ve been getting a few pre-singles and they did a good job picking them because they would be our favorite songs from the album. They are: “Rock N’ Roll Club”, “Anchor’s Up”, “She Don’t Wanna Be Alone” and “Bright Blue Sky.” Others we like “Go Getter”, “In Love Alone” and “It Was You”.

“It Was You” starts with just acoustic guitar but slowly builds up with an elaborate arrangement. That’s a new thing for Kurt.

“Love Express” is a funky song a la the Ohio Players. Again, another change up for Kurt but the thing with Kurt is that he has far flung influences that can crop up at will.

You can hear the album below from Bandcamp. There will be physical copies from Wicked Cool Records soon.

The Jacklights four song EP Final Girl is out now and on Bandcamp.

The song “Final Girl” got lots of attention. The EP’s material never strays too far from that template and why should it? The Jacklights have an identifiable sound. That’s something all groups dream of.

Nilagia McCoy lays down an ultra-distorted guitar bed. It’s a bubbling corrosive stream of lava. In the mix you can still hear the drums and bass, which is nice mixing. We spent time listening to the drums because they are in such relief that it’s easy to do. In “Final Girl” the drummer double times the accents which gives the feeling that the song is faster than it actually is. That was interesting. You can hear the bass pumping in the songs up too. On top of that is Nilagia’s voice which is clear and sort of easily floats over it all.

With Halloween coming up it’s appropriate that “Haunted” starts off the EP. There’s an Edgar Allen Poe illusion in the lyric with, “…the sound of my heart beating under the floor.” With the lyric, “What is that sound? Tap tap tap.” They have some guitar string scraping that just jumps out of the mix in super relief. You feel the guitar is in the room with you.

All the songs come under the end of a relationship situation. That’s always fertile ground.

You can see how “Final Girl” fits in the mix before it comes in at the last song. Before the EP it looked like “Final Girl” would be the signature song for this group but the other songs are right up there with it. The apocalyptic lyrics of “Final Girl” also fits in with the Halloween theme.

We also like the fact that this EP is a strong punk/post punk work that shows the genre is still strong and viable.

The EP release show is at the Square Root on October 10.

You title a song “Fuck Shit Up” and you have our attention. Now, what we want is for the song to really leave a mark.

Well, Grave Secrets (from Los Angeles on Wiretap Records) have that song. It’s excellent punk as it starts, then at the 45 second mark…oh ya, that’s what we want ... the intensity goes up and ya, it leaves a mark!!

We have it on our Top Ten Songs

Trash Knife are a punk outfit from Philadelphia. The lead singer has a vocal style that has a wild abandon quality to it. Not quite as wild as Poly Styrene but getting there.

There current song from a new album is “Party Friends”. We have that below. If you like that they have many more just as good on their Bandcamp page

The Beatersband The Mistons The Woggles

The Beatersband from Italy have a new EP titled 52 Ways to Murder. It's four Misfits songs. We really enjoyed this. The Beatersband bring out the fifties/sixties influences in the songs.

You got to love some of those lyrics. They get gruesome and then lighthearted, like in “Some Kinda Hate”: “The maggots in the eye of love won’t copulate” right to “and it’s a whoah oh oh oh.”

With continuing Covid problems and numbers on the rise again we're always thinking about people being contagious- and here’s a song that uses that as a metaphor, and it works.

“Contageous” by The Mistons (from Portland, OR) gets your attention with the scraping string slides at the beginning. The group has a punk sound with a garage rock rattle that we like. We’ve heard this so many times in clubs. The song itself is sort of ….well…contagious!

We have it on our Top Ten Songs

Everyone’s favorite live band, The Woggles, have a new single out. “Mr. Last Chance”/”Will O’ The Wisp” was recorded in Athens, GA.

When “Mr. Last Chance” begins you can recognize The Woggles patented stomping groove right off the bat. Funny how they have that, when you hear it you can see them live on stage in your mind and your body begins to sway.

They slow things down a bit and get dark and smoky in “Will O’ The Wisp”. There are some sharp riffs and classic guitar tones though this. It’s a delight for the rock and roll ears.
