The Annual Benefit Coleman/Linnea show is 11/24

Third Annual Benefit Coleman/Linnea show is on November 24 at The C Note in Hull.

C Note HullColman Burns-Takki and Linnea Sturdy both members of Bad Movies died within a few weeks of each other in May of 2021. It was a shock for the South Shore music community especially. The profits for the show go to some scholarship funds. All proceeds go to charities their families have set up for them. Last Year they raised $1400 which was split and donated to the respective Charities which sent 2 girls to a science summer Camp on Penikese Island and 1 drummer to attend Berkley College of Music.

Bands on the bill so far are Worm with Vin Ca$h And Josh Crimespree), Far Above The Ground, Highwater Haulers, Dogs In the Woods, Gold Hoax, and Mark Fornwald (a close friend of Colman's Family has been doing a small acoustic set each time) The Facebook page for the event

There’s another chapter in The Dogmatics problems with Brown Paper Tickets. Last heard they were out $4000.00. Still not being paid they did what a fan suggested and went to NBC 10 and got Leslie Gaydos and her investigative team on the case.

Dogumentary

Leslie filmed the group and hey, since they were filming the group played a few songs, ha!

They still don’t have the money but they got a response and a promise to be paid soon and hey, they got some TV time and maybe some new fans from that. These guys are so savvy, that’s taking a negative and making a positive.

The Dogmatics are following their Dogumentary and playing at it’s showing in California at the LA Film Festival on December 2

Salem’s One Fall have a gig in Puerto Rico on January 26. They are on the bill with Shortlife and Sacrosent at Club 77. It looks like it has a vibrant scene there. That plane ride is about four hours.

VIDEOS......

SSD video

The reissued SSD album The Kids Will Have Their Say is being released on November 17 on Trust Records . The now have a video for the remastered version of “Boiling Point”. Order the vinyl record at the Trust Records website.

The group will have an in store showing at Newbury Comics on Thanksgiving eve November 22 with all the members. Just Springa alone is a one man show! We’re glad the group is getting some attention and respect these days. They worked hard then and now to get it.

Speedfossil

Speedfossil does some captivating pop. It’s usually very positive, that’s why we were stopped short when this line came out of the new song/video “Magic Trick”: “that’s the way it goes/when somebody dies.” The death of a loved one and how to deal with it is the subject matter of this song, more specifically it's about "Trick" Wallace!

The song is not slow and the mood is not morbid but it’s realistic and unflinching. They got the perfect tone. The singer says: “And I need a magic trick so I can bring you back again, show me that magic trick so you can make me laugh again.” Such a wonderful sweet song. Kudos. You can read more about it on Twangville.

This is from a upcoming EP Room With A VU, Vol.1 out on April 12, 2024 and will be on the Sonic Escort label.

Brad Marino

Brad Marino has a video for “Lucy” a song off his latest album Grin & Bear It.

Like the song, the video is simple and effective. The colors are at a very low saturation, not black and white but close. Brad has a Kowloon t-shirt on too! We like drummer Zach Sprague’s look – he sits bolt upright. Our favorite moment is when they break into the “Shoo Bop Shoo Bop” at the end.

Billy Idol

Billy Idol has had a long career and probably nobody would have predicted that. There is substance behind the on stage persona. That can be seen on this new video of Billy and his long time guitarist Steve Stevens.

They take “Eyes Without A Face” and downsize it in an intimate setting. Idol’s voice does good service being controlled. Stevens has a wonderful touch on the guitar. He lets loose at the 3:30 mark but again reins it in and does some nice subtle variations in the latter half of the song.

New Order Substance

The 1987 video for New Order’s “1963” has a new spruced up version. This is in conjunction with the rerelease of Substance, a compilation of singles from New Order. There are some extra tracks on this version. The original was a two album set.

The video has that crispness that only black and white seems to get. The joke of the increasing size of the suitcase is a nice metaphor for the baggage we carry in life.

You can order the new version at the New Order website

RADIO......

New FrustrationsThere’s a great opportunity to hear The New Frustrations latest release. Skybar will have Rick and Tom from the group in for an interview on his Rising show (Tuesday 11/14 8pm WMFO 91.5 FM). He will also play their EP Lifetime in its entirety. We want to keep pushing this EP because it is a knockout. It was done at Woolly Mammoth and it is pop rock in the Neighborhoods fashion.

To listen to the show after Tuesday go to the WMFO schedule page Hit the Rising show on 8 to 10 pm on Tuesday, then hit the ‘archive’ button.

Cocktail Slippers at the BurrenBrian Young on A Crash Course for the Ravers had the Cocktail Slippers (Norway) and the Diamond Dogs (Sweden) in as guests. They both played the Burren on Friday with Soria.

The Cocktail Slippers play tuneful rock that’s hard to not like. They're on Little Stephen’s Wicked Cool Records. They were having a party time in the studio with Brian.

Diamond Dogs have been a band since 1992 and have 15 albums out! Brian played plenty of their songs so you get a good idea of what they are about.

To hear the show go to the WMFO schedule page Hit the Crash Course for the Raves show on Saturday at 1pm and then hit the ‘archive’ link.

PODCASTS.........

Another wonderful Elastic Glam show this week. They played “Some Girls” by Racey after “Action” by Sweet. “Some Girls” was written by the same Chinn/Chapman who are responsible for so many great songs. Check out the Racey video for “Some Girls”

Another find was Tuk Smith and the Restless Hearts from Nashville. They are a lot of twin guitar playing along with some platform shoes. Check out this vid for “Girls from the East Side of Town” then go to their Tuk Smith website and proceed from there. There’s plenty to take in.

It’s sort of a podcast. For all you Peter Choyce fans, his old shows are posted on Mixcloud This project aslo has a Facebook page

Peter was a bit of nomad as a DJ. He was on WZBC, WMBR, KUSF and KXLU. He had great taste in music but had a penchant for dropping some verbal bombs that got him in trouble, the same sort of thing that puts him in Facebook jail regularly now. It made for provocative listening.

Here’s the Mixcloud page

Here’s a WZBC show from June of 1994.

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

Lupo Citta Album Cover Dead Raze Album cover

Anything Chris Brokaw (Come, Codine) is involved in gets our attention. He’s got a new group called Lupo Citta with Sarah Black and Jenn Gori (both from Minneapolis and both were in a group called Bleeding Hickeys, and many others).

Two songs are out now on Bandcamp. The feedback squeal that starts “White Bracelet” preps you for the punk that follows. It’s not just that its punk that we like but that it has a classic punk attitude that emanates from it. It’s very raw and layered sounding. In the “Machine Operator” the vocals are echoed out and bouncing around amidst the pulsing background.

This was recorded at the Record Co. and Pete Weiss was involved in the mixing. The whole record comes out January 12. They have a vinyl version too. You can order it now on 12XU Records They have a show at O’Brien’s on Sunday January 14 with Hidden Fountain and Pledge Pins.

Dead Raze are from Ireland. They're a duo that stomps out some swampy blues with garage and punk attitude. They bring to mind elements from locals like Hambone Skinny and Mr. Airplane Man.

Their new album is named Mudbugs (we now have Ed Moose Savage’s attention). They have a lot of shorter songs but we also like the four minute “Big Boom” where they ride the slide heavy and hard.

“You’ll Get Yours” is their typical sound and the video is done in spaghetti western style or we would even say like El Topo style with its offbeat characters. Watch the video

“In the House” has a snappy blues riff that makes it stand out. You can see what the duo looks like in the video for that, here

Even with all the swamp rock their more poppy song "Don’t Go Outside” is one we went back to time and again. The staccato beat alternating with a short ska section was unique and the sympathetic lyric “it’s getting harder to be a girl these days” was appealing. We have it on our Top Ten Songs
