The BGN News Archive

March 19, 2018

The third Nor'Easter in a row put a cramp in our week. We did show up at the Midway on Friday but the show was sold out. So, no show reviews this week.

Phil in Phlash Phil ‘n Phlash did amazing work here in Boston in the early eighties. He’s now located in Chicago where he documents happenings in the city. Here's his blog page with pics. There's also lots of images on his Facebook page.

“Hey Zeus sign with Argonauta Records, promise heavy rock hellfire”…so heralds the Vanyaland headline. Hey Zeus finds an outlet in a label that is based in Italy. Ear and brain damage available now by visiting their Bandcamp page

Art & Soul is an art exhibit in Watertown with some interesting images of rock and roll personalities. The opening is this Friday, March 23 6PM : and they will "honor Rock ‘n Roll historian, acclaimed author and prolific storyteller Peter Guralnick, the exhibition features professional and emerging contemporary art, as well as fan art, that is inspired by, pays tribute to or otherwise celebrates musicians, bands and music culture. The exhibit features visual art in all mediums as well as handmade instruments. The opening reception will feature a DJ spinning hits from the musicians and bands that inspired artwork featured in the show"
More info here: Mosesian Arts, Watertown.

Marsman is involved in a fundraiser on Friday April 6, in Plymouth to benefit local music programs. There is going to be a Pop Up Museum by David Bieber and his legendary Archives. Tim Downie and Cha Chi Loprete will be spinning records. Theirs is beer tasting and food too. Tickets are $50.00 and $125.00. Get your tickets here!!

Here’s a few new songs we came across this week...

Today Junior Today Junior’s latest song posting is “Skate Punx”. It has all the characteristics that mark them as one of the most promising and interesting groups on the scene now. It’s sort of surfy and sort of punky. The lyrics hit a long standing and always relevant generation gap problem. There is an album following soon.

The Monks of Doom who have members of Camper Van Beethoven and Counting Crows are doing what they describe as ‘mind melting psychedelia” which sounds like a good description of the music on their new video “Up From the Cane"

Death Pesos who we fell in love with at O’Briens (that sounds like a song, right there) has a new ‘single’ out on Bandcamp. We think it's an advance copy not available to all yet. It shows them progressing a bit more away from traditional ruts and playing up their quirky individuality. Nicely done. They we be playing O’Briens on Friday, April 6th, with Jessica Rabbit Syndrome, Sundrifter and Canadian Rifle. To hold you over here’s a another cut, T.W.A., from Bandcamp that shows their hammer-the riff hard rock attack.

Another group that we have run into twice this last month and have been wowed by is The Gala. – Check out their video for their latest song “Touch Me

We like looking at music films but we are cheap too. We found that that library has some titles and with portals like Hoopla, which our library has, you don’t even have to leave the house!! They're streaming for your winter cocooning pleasure.

Chicago Punk In Hoopla we found You Weren’t There a documentary on Chicago punk, Big Star’s Nothing Can Hurt Me, Sound City by David Grohl, T-Rex; The Marc Bolan Story, Viva Joe Strummer: The Clash and Beyond, Nick Cave: 20,000 Days on Earth, and Don’t Ask Me Questions a look at the career of Graham Parker and the Rumor. There’s plenty of more main stream titles. Check your library’s digital portal and see what you can find.

Speakign of music films - Ransom Note Productions will be filming of ‘Live at the Midway- A Rockumentary’ produced by Billy Squire (not Billy Squier) on Sunday, March 25 at 3:30 PM - 8 PM. This special matinee show will feature the music of Rick Berlin and the Nickel and Dime Band, The Hi-End, Erin Harpe and the Delta Swingers and Fur Purse.
