The Jungle
Photo: Blowfish

We wanted to get out before the hellacious heat began so we headed to The Jungle on Thursday. It was a chance to see Justine and the Unclean who we haven’t seen in a few months. This was their first time at the new club. It seems like people are slowly finding this place. With the construction in Union Square a lot of people are shying off from that area altogether.

The club is very comfortable. With the raised stage you can sit, yes SIT, and see the band easily. One thing, that sound system is not so good. Both bands we saw suffered from it to some degree. There’s a trade off there but we still give it a thumbs up.

Justine and the Unclean did their usual bang up job. They had the songs, the chops and the personalities all cooking. Those songs from the first album were still knock outs and there were a parcel of new ones (which are also are being recorded at Woolly Mammoth).

The Jungle stage is dark and Jim Janota was in the darkest corner to boot. You couldn’t see his stick twirling action but you could hear the strong drumming. Charles Hanson had his moments where even when you could see his fingers you couldn’t understand how he got those notes out. You would need slow mo action and some tablature transcriptions to begin to get a handle on it. The vocals were a bit buried but just enough to give the songs their character.

Blindspot was up next. Blindspot won the night of the Rumble that included Justine and the Unclean. They asked Justine to be on the bill and that’s pretty cool.

This is our third time seeing this band. Their win of their Rumble night was confirmation that they have something that could go big. They have a clean sound that could have mainstream appeal or say a wider appeal than most. They are a duo. They use a prerecorded track to make a bigger sound. Alexa, the vocalist/front person, has a clear, full voice that often goes to “oh oh” cheers that are hopelessly catchy. She also has a distinctive set of moves that you remember. They're out of our punk purview but we can see they are putting a lot of work into the band.

And in other news.....

Brainiac This Thursday July 25 The Brattle is showing the film Brainiac: Transmissions After Zero which is about the Dayton, OH band Brainiac.

Here’s the blurb about it: In the mid ‘90s the Dayton, OH music scene became an indie rock hot spot because of bands like The Breeders and Guided by Voices. Arguably the most innovative of them all was Brainiac, led by musical genius and charismatic front man Tim Taylor. The band was slated to sign a major label record deal when Taylor was tragically killed in a bizarre accident, leaving his family and bandmates to pick up the pieces. This film explores the band’s music, legacy, influence, and how people survive and cope with the loss of loved ones. FB Page and Brattle Webpage

Brix ‘n Mortar released a digital single just before an upcoming full album release. “Freshcut” the a side is nice hardcore cut. “Suburban Murders”, the b side, is a very exciting stretch. It starts with a piano, then the band kicks in. The vocals are a mix of Troy and Joey Riot which is an element that we love about this band. There is a defined melody you can hang on and the piano comes in again with the band. It’s just a wonderful creative mix of genres and ideas. It’s on our Top Ten Songs Here it is on Bandcamp

Coffin Salesman The Coffin Salesman have a new EP Misadventure. It’s a continuation of their impressive mix of folk punk. To us they sound like they would appeal to a large audience. The first song "White Girl, Wasted" is word heavy which is a trademark for them. The lyrics are also clever as they character sketch. It ends with the line, “you do a pretty good impression of you”. They begin “Bon Voyage” slow and soft but they ramp it up in the end. Here it is on Bandcamp Misadventure

And.....Jittery Jack and Stop Calling Me Frank are featured on Rum Bar Records 26 track, Free Digital Download Summer Sampler 'Somebody Out There Is Having A Party': here you go...lissen here

The Dogmatics have signed on to Rum Bar Records. They will release their first recording of brand new music in over 30 years this October.!! Leave it to Rum Bar and Lou!! We can't wait to hear the new songs!!

Nat Freedberg Nat Freedberg is on a creative streak. Just a few months after his solo album his new band Freeloader has released The Path of Least Resistance a new album on Rum Bar Records. It closes with “Ten Songs Make an Album", a humorous look at the record making situation Nat finds himself in. How can you have an album without a cover, where do you clean your weed? How do you make a single you can’t’ hold. He pines for the old days. One thing is still true he figures and that’s “Ten Songs Make an Album”. The songs features some Charles Hanson soloing, some Jim Janota cowbell and even some space to spotlight Jim Haggerty on bass. Listen to it here.

The Vibrators are touring!! They are at O'Brien's on Thursday Sept. 5. Tix here.
