Being at O’Brien’s on a Tuesday was a familiar situation but there was a twist this time – the club was crowded. Sometimes there are only a dozen people there midweek. This bill was focused on groups connected to Gunner Records. They're based in Germany and are starting an American branch. The first release ifs a split 12 incher with Bundles/Dan Webb and the Spiders.

I was immediately carried away by Dan Webb and the Spiders. They were knocking it out hard. There was some pop in the melodies and vocals but the muscular punch in the attack disguised that. The vocals were what really got to me; two and three people singing at once and the background vocals were worked out to add punch and hooks, just beautiful. Believing they were from out of town, I thought – why don’t we have some group like this around here. I was wrong; they come from the Boston area and have a few recorded efforts already. For some reason they never got on my radar.

They ran their song right through without stopping and without letting up the urgent attack. Theoretically maybe they should have some dynamics but in reality I didn’t want any and I don’t think letting up for a second is in their battle plan. Their recorded material will give you an idea of what they sound like but I can’t hear anything that comes up to the quality of what I heard at O’Brien’s. Dan Webb and the Spiders Bandcamp

No Weather Talks had a similar thrust as the Spiders but I didn’t think they were up to the same level. I think I would have liked them better if I hadn’t been overwhelmed by that previous set. I stayed through the set despite getting very hot. This was one of those abnormally warm days last week and the AC was off. The club got hot and sweaty fast. By the time Bundles came it was just too uncomfortable and I baled after a few songs.

When I walked into the Midway on Saturday I was looking at someone dressed as a banana. Then I saw Hans Solo and Freddy Mercury. These were the costumes of Power Slut. Was this normal for them or it was an early Halloween celebration? Power Slut are an indie music combo of pop and nerd rock. The songs are well thought out and have lots of detail in the music and lyrics. The mock Freddie Mercury on bass was actually from Muck and the Mires.

Burnt Village

Slimedog who is hardcore centric is intrigued by them especially the intense lyrics. I did check out some of the lyrics on Bandcamp and he’s right they are very good. As a group they reminded me of a lot of 80s indie rockers like Hell Toupee.

Burnt Village was old school metal. I liked that they didn’t tune low. They drilled out riff based tunes. And those riffs fit into a groove that they hammered on. It was immediately a hair thrashing soundtrack. The guitarists’ straight line up on stage mirrored the way they controlled the riffs. The element that put them over the top was the drummer. He was a busy player and he hit strong. He floated the beat with a cascade of thundering hits. It felt like a herd of wildebeests coming at you. At the end of a few songs he stood up and raised his hands like someone scoring a touchdown. His joy was infectious.
They covered Motorhead's Killed by Death and had a song about H. P. Lovecraft.

Their Facebook page says they started in 2016. That’s amazing. They don’t have any recorded stuff yet. Frankly, this isn't my favorite type of music but I would seek out these guys again!
